You can make a woven mat for sitting on out of newspaper. It makes a good place to sit when camping. You fold the newpaper the long way into 1-2" strips then weave them together in the basket weave method. Leave enough at the ends to fold and tuck the ends under the last strip on each side.

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to? Water or any moisture would ruin them and all your hard work would be for nothing. If they weren't sealed, they'd leave black ink smudges on the floor. If they could be sealed in some way...but then they'd probably be stiff and hard.
I crochet rugs out of plastic bags--any and all kinds. They're free and last forever, and you can wash them too.
