The absolute best thing I have used is a mixture that was made to get rid of skunk odor, its chemically able to break down the urine crystals that form.
Use a bottle of peroxide, about half a cup of baking soda, and a couple of spoonfuls of Dawn. You mix it up and apply, let it sit for about five minutes, then blot it out. It works like a charm. It even got out the cat urine on my sister's mattress (her cat was not happy at being left alone for the day). (09/22/2009)

You can find a product called Natures Miracle in most pet stores. This product is fantastic. Our dog had pooped on a white Berber carpet in a house we rented one summer and it removed every bit of the stain and odor. It removes the scent completely so the animal does not revisit the spot. Don't use a vinegar or ammonia based cleaner that attracts them back. (09/23/2009)

Try the powdered Oxy-Clean. Dilute with hot water. Pour on spot and leave on 1 minute. Take clean dry cloth and rub out. Let it dry. If there's still some stain do this again. I found this to work the best for me. (06/29/2005)

Try this on a place that can't be seen on your carpet first. I too have white carpet in my living room and also in my office. My mom stayed with us for awhile after her operation and brought along her 9 week old Boxer. He used the bathroom everywhere he could in my livingroom. I would try to get it up with the usual stuff: vinegar, carpet cleaner, etc.
When my mom left to go home, I decided that I couldn't hurt the carpet anymore than it already was so I got out the carpet cleaner, used "hot" water and washed the carpet with my regular laundry detergent. I would dilute 1/4 cup of detergent in the hot water, pour it in the canister and fill the rest of the canister up with more hot water. The carpet looks new. Really, you would never know that it had spot after spot after spot on it. Good luck with your project. (06/29/2005)

Dog Urine Stains on Carpet
If you have a dog urine stain on your carpet all you need to do is take a mixture of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water and spray it on the spot and then rub.

I have used Biological Washing Powder in warm water and that worked. Someone told me that there's an enzyme in soap powder that gets rid of any "scent" so a dog won't continue to mark a spot. (07/26/2005)

Peroxide works on blood and urine stains most times and the odor can be neutralized with vinegar. Once vinegar dries the vinegar smell will dissipate. (07/26/2005)

Someone gave me a great piece of advice when my dog was a puppy. Pour cold water on the pee spot, let it soak for a few minutes then soak it up with a fluffy old towel. So I tried it and it worked, no more stains. The best part was that it took out stains that were old and wouldn't come out with all the fancy carpet cleaners, etc. Anytime I have used cleaners, I can smell the odor left behind and it stains. Even after shampooing the carpet the smell is still there. But anytime I used the cold water, nothing, no smell, no stain. It may not work if you have already scrubbed the carpet with cleaners, but if it stinks anyway it doesn't hurt to try. Good luck. (07/31/2005)

Please help the dog messed and I tried ammonia to clean it and there is a big spot now and it is yellowish. I think I made it worse. Please help.
Editor's Note: Ammonia will make it worse, try using white vinegar instead. The urine contains ammonia so you are just making it stronger. (08/17/2006)

Try "Folex" for all carpet stains. I have 2 dogs a cat and 3 kids and I swear by this product. You can find it at Albertson's or Walmart. We also make a mix that prevents the dogs from going in the same spot. In a regular size spray bottle full of water add equal parts (we usually put 10-20 drops) Lemon Oil, Eucalyptus oil, and Lavender oil. This keeps the dogs from going in the same spot and smells great, too. Oils can be found at any health food store. (04/02/2007)

It seems to be a problem for those of us that have a very special loved one or one's in our life. It's very simple depending on our attitude towards our pets, some people classify our methods as harsh and some as way too simple. Firstly our pets or loved one's, I prefer to use the term loved one's cause really thinking about it if it's not loved then problems will re-occur and re-occur until such time wooden flooring or tiles become an option. Pets are not the solution, but the dissolution of what may follow.
Let's understand the basic principles of pets firstly.
- Pets are great, depending on the carpet many so called solutions above will not or will work.
- Environment, pets react how we react, although senses are better, our pets must understand the basics of fitting into our lifestyle. Babies are not easy initially, however because we define them as being dependent we take a certain responsibility to look after such a baby or infant.
- Pets think about simple solutions, it's easier for a pet e.g. dog or cat to urinated on our carpets than it is for them to understand what and why they are doing what we don't expect, although it's wrong.
- Discipline becomes a factor to avoid such behavior, we behave in ways which are or are not acceptable, however we continue to react and/or behave in such a manner, pets are no different.
Although carpets vary, some stains or odors will never be removed, for example if our household contains carpets of high durability substance, such as industrial or very hard based grooved carpets, urine stains can be removed, but odors will remain until such time the carpet is removed or substituted with tiles or wooden flooring.
My method is simple, every action requires a reaction, if carpets are of high durability (to test this, take a straw and run through the carpet up and down to see if any variations exist in the material i.e. bumps, grooves, tough compound, rigid, or resistance of any matter) and ensure that according to the above each point is noted.
To put it simply, if high durability carpets are installed into your household with pets which are destructive, the simple solution is to either replace with wooden flooring or tiles, there are no alternatives for removing stains including vinegar, pet shop anti-spot or odor removals or even carpet cleaners, wet or dry repairs. You simply need to substitute no matter how hard or costly you my find this. Durability is exactly the problem, is enables undercoats of layers to become infected with bacteria which cannot be removed.
Carpets with low durability, but treated with a chemical called Scotch Guard becomes a simple solution. Soda Water or water with increased gas levels is appropriate in such instances. Carbonated water and Buffer Salt are excellent absorbers of odors and excellent absorbers of ammonia, ammonia by the way is a disinfectant and not a preservation and/or removal chemical which removes stains. Ammonia is great for clothing as clothing material is simply stitched and extremely thin, whereas carpets are durable to some extent and can absorb ammonia which bacteria feeds off.
Ladies and gentlemen, use Carbonated water (Soda Water) on high quality carpets and substituting industrial, high durability or low quality carpets. Train your pet. Let pets become part of our life and not life which makes us part.
Try Soda Water, it's carbonated which is fantastic. For those with yellow stains and odorless carpets, please replace and react when your pet acts. Discipline is key to our success. (02/05/2008)

There is a product that works great on carpet "Spot Shot". You spray it on and it lifts the stain in seconds after you dab it with a towel. Does not work on my couch though, which is white cotton. I used it and it got rid of a stain that had been there for almost a year. Just like new. (03/09/2008)

I've tried a lot of different products. Steam cleaning the carpet worked for a while, but either the spot comes back over time or my dog is remarking it. I even bought a Spot Shot, but found that leaves a bigger spot on the carpet. Here's a solution I found that at least made the spot disappear and removed the smell.
- 2 cups 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- 2 drops dish soap
I put it in a spray bottle, and soaked the carpet. Do not blot it up. Just vacuum it when the carpet is dry. I also saw another mixture that said to add 2 cups of white vinegar. Hope this helps (11/26/2008)

I used the original Listerine mouthwash. I poured it on the spot and blotted it up. It killed the stain and the odor immediately. I had used the steam cleaner shortly thereafter and have not had problem since. (12/14/2008)
