I had a recipe for homemade shower cleaner that I found on the Scrubbing Bubbles Page (which I found odd) and I lost it. It contained scented bleach, Dawn, and a couple other ingredients that I can't remember. Can anyone help me? Thanks.
I applaud the Dawn Detergent and baking soda mixture! I have a very high iron content in my water and my shower gets stained orange/brownish color. I would use SOS pads, which worked but not as good as this. Hardly any elbow grease to get it off...amazing. Thanks so much for the tip. You have to try this!
Regarding mixing dish soap and bleach again! Here's a couple links to read how the two do combine do make fumes such as Mustard Gas :-o Sorry I didn't post the links when I commented before :-(
Ima Tramp, you should listen to Camper917! I just googled about mixing bleach and dish soap and the fumes are deadly! Stop and think about it: Perhaps the reason the recipe is no longer on the Scrubbing Bubbles page is because they were advised to take it down because of possible law suits and prosecution if anyone was disabled (like the COPD which I now have from harsh chemicals) or died! I can tell you have your heart set on that original recipe but I truly believe you should just try some of the more natural remedies suggested here by other posters and see which one works best for you.
I saw the original recipe called for mixing Dawn and scented bleach. Mixing bleach with any type of detergent will cause form noxious fumes. I have always read never to do this. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Vinegar and baking soda work great!
1 box Baking soda. Dawn dish soap (enough to moisten the baking soda.) Put baking soda in a bowl. Add Dawn dish soap, a small amount at a time, stirring after each addition. You can make a smaller amount by using less baking soda for the base. When it's the consistency you want, it's ready to use. I smoothe it on a wash cloth & scrub away. If you place the "tub scrub" in a container with a lid that closes tightly, it will keep for several days. It's a lovely color, so you can place it on the counter in a decorative jar (just be sure to label it as a cleaning product.) We bought, renovated & sold houses for years. I've used a lot of cleaners in that work, even industrial strength stuff. This homemade cleaner is the best thing I have ever used for cleaning tub, sinks, showers, etc. It doesn't scratch & it doesn't take a lot of "elbow grease." It only costs pennies. I found the recipe in Woman's World Weekly.
Another terrific cleaning idea for toilet bowls. Drop two denture cleaning tablets into the toilet bowl (They will fizz in the water.) Close the lid, & wait a few moments. (If you have no children nor pets to worry about, you can leave the lid open.) After a few moments swish with a toilet brush. Flush & you should have a sparkling bowl, (even if it was really grimy to start with.)

RE: Homemade Shower Cleaner
I use distilled white vinegar. Mix a little bit in a spray bottle with some water. If the doors are really dirty, first make a paste of baking soda, white vinegar and a drop or two dish soap. Scrub. Rinse. Don't worry about the smell. Vinegar deodorizes and the smell disappears when it is dried. You can add a drop of essential oil to make it scented if you like. (08/14/2007)
Here's what works for me. First, use any product to really clean the doors. Then, get rid of bar soap (which contains waxes that cause the buildup) and use liquid soap (any kind). I use the big refills from Target or Walmart. Result? No scum buildup. Now, for the final thing. When you finish drying off with your towel, take 15 seconds (yes, it's that little time) to quickly wipe the water off the doors (no need to totally dry - just use your already damp towel). The difference is amazing - and all for just 15 seconds per shower.

Use a mix of vinegar with a few drops of lavender or tea tree oil in a spray bottle. It should get your doors really clean and tea tree oil is a disinfectant. (08/17/2007)
