Are you getting new carpet? What we did was have the installer of our wall to wall carpet put a sheet of plastic between the carpet and the pad. That way accidents don't go all the way into the the pad which is like a sponge. The installers weren't crazy about the idea but it has worked great for us. We have multiple cats and dogs. This saved us when we had an elderly not always continent dog.
