My dad introduced me to something called "elbow grease' & tsp a powdered cleaner that you use exactly as directed. It can be found in any hardware store, he said " the elbow grease is free" & the tsp shouldn't cost more than 3.00 for a small (only size I've seen) box.

We used one gallon of warm water with two cap fulls of bleach mix. Sprayed the area down scrubbed with brush then cleaned up with sponge.

Seems to have done the trick

Mildew or black mold is caused by dampness. A good step in prevention is to keep the window open or a fan running when showering or bathing. You could also wipe the walls down with a towel or use a squeegee to keep the walls dry.

Here are some recipes for cleaning mildew:

*Non Toxic Mildew Remover

1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup borax
2 cups water

Combine in a spray bottle. Spray on dirty areas of bathtubs, shower curtains, or tile; let sit 5 minutes then scrub with a cloth.

*Strong Bleach Mildew Remover

Good for big cleaning projects. Effective for removing
mildew in the bathroom.

2 quarts water
1 quart chlorine bleach
1 tablespoon laundry detergent (powdered)

Apply to mildew. Use rubber gloves and use in a well ventilated area.

As bleach is toxic, use care whenever using it. This recipe should only be used when nothing else has worked.

Any other ideas how to remove mildew without bleach?
Susan
