Ingredients

  • 12 thin slices white bread
  • butter or margarine
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 tsp. prepared mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. mayonnaise
  • 1 lb. ground chuck
  • 1/2 cup onion, minced
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 cup pickle relish
  • 12 thin onion slices, opt.
  • 1 large tomato, cut into 6 slices

Directions

About 30 minutes ahead:

Spread one side of bread slices with butter or margarine. Combine cheese with mustard, and mayonnaise; set aside. Start heating oven to 450 degrees F. With fork, mix chuck, onion, water, salt, and pepper; shape into 6 patties. Saute' in hot butter in skillet 3-5 minutes on each side or to desired doneness. While sauteing burgers, heat bread slices in the oven. Watch them closely and assemble when both bread and burgers are finished with relish, onion slices and tomatoes.

I wonder if a part of the recipe got cut off. In the directions it says to start heating the oven to 450, but it never tells you to put anything in the preheated oven. They sound good right now though!
