I am a 26 year old male living in Southern, New Jersey. I was bitten by about 40 chiggers, mostly around the ankles(thank GOD) and 2 or 3 in my nether reigions(one of which was in a VERY bad spot, about 2 1/2 months ago. About HALF of them are cleared up. Thankfully the 2 or 3 that were the most embarrasing are gone with no signs they were ever there, HOWEVER, there are still about 20 bites on my ankles that STILL itch and it does not seem like they will EVER go away. They are much more manageable now and only itch if i rub against them first but the slightest touch from a sock or in the shower and theyre back to full blast itching but its only for a couple minutes, no longer "Unbearable". I am writing this to educate people who might have the bites and also people or are saying "10 to 14 days". THEY HAVE NO DEADLINE AS TO WHEN THEY HEAL!!! Everyone is different!! What I can tell you is after the worst subsides take care of the affected area. Since it is skin you are taking care of using lotions or neosporin(like) products at the later stages might help the healing process. Obviously because these bites are down towards my feet they are taking longer to heal. Less circulation at your feet = slower healing times in that area. Just know your not alone and it will eventually go away. But be prepared for the long haul. And to whoever they only last 14days on. What kind of super drugs are u on and where can i get some!?

Lucky me, I have had to deal with poison ivy and chigger bites 2 years in a row. Well, Last summer, week 3 into the poison ivy after trying everything, my mom mentioned "Ivy Dry". We looked it up and it's still available. Well, it works wonders on posion ivy. BUT, what I'm getting to is.. Ivy Dry works well on all kinds of bug bites as well. The only bad thing is.. wherever you spray it, that skin will get dried out and the spray stings like crazy when you first spray it on. But i promise you, this stuff works great! It's about $10 and you can find it at CVS and Kroger and theres more, but those 2 are where I have purchased it from. Hope this helps.

i worked on MODOT and the thing i found out was to DRY OUT THE SKIN !!!! Bleach really dries out the skin. ALSO the same applies to POISON IVY n such. I also found just washing yourself with soap, like anti-bacterial DIAL will hel[p a lot. After a while, just washing myself with DIAL took care of the problem.

I have about 50 chigger bites that just showed up the day after a fishing expedition. I scratched until I was crazy! Then remembered epsom salts are good at "drawing out" things, so I took a VERY HOT SOAK in the tub with about 3 cups of the epsom salts. Then, instead of drying off, I mixed some epsom salts with very, very little water and put a wash of that solution over all the spots and drip dried. So far, so good. If that doesn't work in the long run, I'm going to try the vinegar and baking soda paste and if that doesn't work, then I'll try the bleach. Most of them are in my "nether" regions so I have to be careful what I use and I don't have any money to buy anything not already in my house. Nasty, nasty little critters!

A couple of postings have already stated this - unfortunately, the itch won't be totally gone until your body has reabsorbed the "feeding tube" it created when the chigger bit your skin.

If you've been outdoors, be sure to shower soon afterwards to remove any leftover critters, and wash your clothes too, as soon as practical.

If you've been biten, popular anti-itch lotions, topical analgestics and/or antiseptics, and in extreme cases the use of prescription medications, PLUS time, are the only relief available. You can use nail polish - but its not a cure - mostly a reminder not to scratch the welt. As already mentioned on this site, though chiggers do not carry disease, scratching the affected area may lead to a secondary infection - something you want to avoid - so, wash up well, apply OTC products to alleviate the itch, and see a physician if the bites are extremely bad, or are really bothering you.

Having grown up in central Missouri, playing outdoors in the woods and tall grasses was a daily event. Before going out, mom would douse our clothing (leg, waist and arm openings) with powdered sulfur (also known as "flowers of sulfur"). You don't need to eat matches, folks, but sulfur works - ask any hunter. BUT be forewarned - sulfur stinks. Powdered sulfur is available at pharmacy stores.

The Missouri Department of Conservation has a good article on chiggers, their bites, prevention, relief, etc. - recommended reading for those unfamiliar with the chigger mite. http://mdc.mo.gov/nathis/arthopo/chiggers/

Good luck.

I can't help but laugh, not at anyone, but with you all. When i explain chigger bites to a city dwellers, they think I am telling another tall tell. But you are all now believers in Chiggers! The only product i use is Chiggerex. Apply it on immediately when you feel the itch. Re-apply once or twice daily. The sooner it is applied, the less you will suffer. I find it at Wal-Mart, sometimes, and CVS, sometimes. You can buy it on the web, for about a dollar more, as well.

Been researching these stupid chigger bites since I moved to the cabin in Tenn. Clear nail polish won't work by the time it's itchy and red, the bug is gone. Use anti itch cream and wipe them with alcohol. You are just treating the bite, the bug is gone. If they are in your yard spray with soapy water it kills them. Also use deet it helps my kids have no bites but we spray them when they go out with cutters. My husband and I have about 40 bites each, no joke. They itch so bad and if you scratch it hurts. Well good luck, hope this helps.

The best thing I did when I had chiggers was I went swimming. I honestly didn't know that it would help till I got out of the pool and everything was gone and NO MORE itching! So I guess the chlorine(sp) helps. So just go swimming and see if that helps for you.

I went camping for a week and on the last day, I was attacked by the damn chiggers. I asked a lot of people for suggestions until I spoke to my grandma and she said that what they did when she was little, was heat the end of a match and blow it out and lay it directly on the bite. I thought it would really hurt but actually as much as those stupid things itched it felt pretty good. They scabbed up after a day and they are gone! Make sure that you use Alcohol to make sure they are clean first. Then you can put a antibiotic cream on after. I swear it works!

I know if I make a paste from oatmeal and put it on my skin for 30 minutes once a day for 3 days, my poison oak was cured. It pulls out the poison from the skin. I wonder if it would apply to chigger bites. I used callydryl for the itchiness in between.

NC seems bad for chiggers. I'm a marine that trains new marines how to survive in combat and now all I can concentrate on are all the dang chiggers on my body. My chest, back, arms and legs are covered. I tried chigg away which I have not seen mentioned here. Maybe they just sell it on base but it works good as long as you don't sweat a lot. It relieves the itching and repels from future bites. Also another little trick from the marines is to eat the tops of matches before a hike. It contains sulfur and they seem to hate sulfur.

Wow. I have read everything and tried all of the above except the deodorant and the mixing of baking soda and water. None of them have worked on me. People Have different immunities so these things only work on certain people. I wish there was some way to get rid of them for everyone. Well I'm going to go try the other two I guess. I will let everyone know how that goes. Have a Good Day!

It's surprising - I scanned thru all the previous posts and no one mentioned the one 'cure' that worked on my little boy. I popped him into a tub filled w/ an epsom salt bath; let him play for about 1/2 hour. When he was out and dried, pj'd and fed, I gave him bendryl and the next morning he was MAJOR better! Moral: Epsom salts aren't just grandma's cure-all. It worked!

I used Clorox in bath water. It didn't help. Then I was going crazy. I have bites from the knees down and all over my arms. I then went to the pharmacy and they recommended taking two benedryl and a medicine called chiggard. The stuff worked great but I can't get it off my skin. It is ten times worse than trying to peel clear nail polish off. I get married in less than 2 weeks and I gotta get rid of these things. Help me. Any suggestions on getting rid of the spots in a hurry?

What good does a chigger do in life? I mean everything has a purpose in life but I have seen nothing good from these things. I haven't been out yet this year in the woods. I woke up one morning and I have these little bumps on my side the next morning i have a have another spot the size of two silver dollars. I guess i am lucky because right now they don't itch just look SUPER gross. I had some predisone left over and it seems like it is helping some with the redness. I'm just not sure where I picked these things up at I go to the woods all the time to fish and camp and never ran into them in over 20 plus years. I guess its my time.

Chiggers only bite in the juvenile stage - they drop off shortly after gorging them selves on mammalian fluids (you). Contrary to popular opinion they do not embed themselves in your skin, so do not use nail polish or bleach as it is only adding toxins to toxins! Chiggers inject a small amount of an antiseptic material to numb the area that they are attacking and they are generally not detected until long after they have fallen off.

You can, if you are particularly sensitive, notice a small tickle sensation as they attach but it is barely noticeable. Some responders are right in warning: DO NOT SCRATCH as this can lead to secondary infections, possible scarring and open portals to some very nasty bacteria (MRSA aka flesh eating bacteria). My advice is to use a product called Mitigator Sting & Bite Scrub. It has baking soda, papain (meat tenderizer to absorb toxins) and walnut shell granules to open the pores.

Scrubbing with your fingertips substitutes for scratching with your fingernails and since it has no harsh chemicals or foul odors it can be reapplied as often as needed. You can find it at Longs Drug stores or on the web at: www.mitigator.net.

I've tried everything that has ever existed on the face of the planet to get these stupid bites off of my ankles. Nothing has worked.
I do know how to make the bites smaller. Soak the area in warm/hot water for about 15 minutes. Add LOTS of baking soda. Continue soaking for 15 more minutes. Do NOT rub the bites with a towel to dry them. Dab the towel against them or simply air dry.
Good luck!

I have about 100 chigger bites around my the waist, upper thighs and chest. I carry Chiggerex around in my purse, which helps with the itching, but I want them off me so bad! The welts are the size of dimes and sometimes quarters! I am going to the coast this weekend and plan to get in the salt water for about an hour (even if it is October). I am willing to try anything. My thighs are bruised from all the scratching. I am going to soak in a Clorox bath tonight. Haven't tried that yet. I'll let you know how that works.

3 weeks ago was hiking and got bit up by chiggers. My ankles and feet were covered. Swore I would never go in the woods again. Two days ago went in the woods again. (different woods) Now my upper body was attacked. I am going to lose my mind. I am scratching until I bled. I can't help it. I make sure I clean wounds with alcohol afterward. I have tried Tea Oil, Benedryl, Camphor, nail polish, alcohol, nothing works long enough to sleep the night! Bleach does work somewhat. Gonna try ambesol. Can't find that darn chiggerex! It is war on chiggers! Death to them all.

Try pure, clear aloe vera gel. (Not the green-colored kind marketed for sunburns.) You can get it at natural food stores and some specialty grocers, and it feels even better if you chill it in the fridge before putting it on. (FYI, once the protective seal on the aloe vera is open it must be refigerated - it keeps for a long time.) Simply apply some of the aloe vera on irritated skin with your bare hands and let the liquid dry. I have found that this method is pretty effective for me and my young nieces and nephews. Plus, it's all natural and far safer (for you and, especially, for young kids!) than bleach. Good luck - hopefully this will work for you, too.

As far as a repellent goes, you can try natural remedies for this as well. A simple and effective recipe for insect repellent follows, and yields about 4 oz:

(use any three of the following essential oils:)
25-30 drops lavender oil
25-30 drops peppermint oil
23-30 drops geranium oil
25-30 drops lemongrass oil
25-30 drops cedar oil

witch hazel

jojoba OR sweet almond oil

Instructions:
Mix the selected 3 essential oils in a 4 oz spray bottle. Add about 1 to 2 tablespoons of either the jojoba or sweet almond oil. Fill the remaining space in the spray bottle with witch hazel. Replace the cap and spray nozzle and gently shake to combine all ingredients. To use, spray liberally on skin and clothing, focusing especially on ankles, forearms, armpits, and the pelvic area (especially if you intend to be out sunbathing in a swimsuit.)

The bug repellent can be stored in a cool, dry area. It doesn't need to be refrigerated. The liquids and oils will separate naturally, but alleviating this only requires another gentle shake before use. The witch hazel in the mix will prevent the repellent from feeling greasy or too oily, and the jojoba or sweet almond oil will help moisturize your skin at the same time.

If you suspect that chigger larvae have worked their way into your skin or are still present, a hot shower should kill them and remedy this. After the shower, go ahead and apply the aloe vera.

Here's to a chigger-less summer!

Last spring I got over 300 chigger bites on my feet and legs just walking to and from the clothesline one day. Nothing you buy over the counter stops the itching. The doctor had to give me steroids to weaken my immune system(the itching is an immune system response). The bites also got infected from all the scratching and I had to take antibiotics, too. Between the two drugs I ended up with all kinds of infections(ears, throat, etc...). Costed a fortune in doctor bills and a lot of hassels with the insurance company -- mine doesn't have good hands, just a finger. For those who wanted to know: chiggers are the tiny babies of certain insects. They are partial to hot, humid climates, and they are bright red because the Devil is their father.

The best thing ive found that works for me and the kids is stick deodorant. this seals the pores and I think the chemicals in the deodorant act like a pesticide cuz it works. it stops the itching right away . good luck.

My son has chigger bites and the doctor told us to put ambesol on them. Yes, that's the teething stuff. It contains benzocaine which will numb them and stop the itch. If you get a bunch of bites, she said to take some bendryl. Hope that helps everyone out!

I use bleach, too. Except I just put a little on some cotton swabs, full strength, and touch the swab to the place where the chigger is. Voilla! no more itching!!!
This would not be a good idea if they were to be anywhere near the face, but I have never had any chiggers camp out there anyway. :)

I bought that Chiggerex the other day for mosquito bites and it was a wasted 3.59. Next time I will read the bottle, and if it says apply as much as you want it means it doesn't work!!! It didn't do diddlysquat. And we are on a limited fixed income. Our oldtimer friend said to mix a paste out of vinegar and baking soda to put on the bites. Works like a charm. You have to mess with it a little bit to get it the right consistency. And put a towel under whatever you dobbed, it does flake off. Repeat maybe 3 or 4 times a day, or only as necessary.

Their definition says they are" 6 legged larva of a mite". They hang around in grasses. They are so tiny you usually can't even see them! I have seen them and they are a teensy red or orange speck about the size of a finely ground speck of pepper! They like to bite around your ankles, waistbands, bra bands. The itch is almost unbearable, you can't stop scratching! Plus the dang bites keep on itching for 10 to 14 days! Use topical itch medicines and I've also had some relief by soaking the bites in a bleach/water solution. I don't think they're found all over America but they're sure found in Missouri, Lucky Me! :>(

I use the clear fingernail polish with liquid bandaid on top, because I am more likely to scratch if they just itch a tiny bit. Renew every day.

You can control the itching by putting a piece of scotch tape over the bite area. Trust me, it works!

If you don't want to bathe in bleach water, just dip a cottom swab into the bleach bottle and dab it on each bite. It may sting if you've scratched the bites alot, but the itching will stop and the bites will dry out.

We used a salt water bath immediately after being exposed to chiggers. I don't know if it will work on them now, but it's something you can keep in mind next time it happens.

I had tried this remedy on mosquito bites and it works very well. Meat Tenderizer, mixed with water, to make a paste, put on your chigger bites. Continue using it until it stops the itching. This works on most insect bites, including wasps.
You will be amazed how the itching stops and goes away very fast.

your local pharmacy or Walmart should have a cream called Chiggerrid.......it works to relieve the itching or take Benedryl also to help.
