She would bring water to a boil, then add slices lemons (i like to do it with limes too) and let steep. Then add honey to taste. Another thing that is great with this is to add crushed peppermint candies, or peppermint extract. I don't claim any medicinal value, but the mint and lemon combo is tasty and feels good on a sore throat.
