A great appetizer or side dish could be fruit kabobs. Slide pineapple, star fruit, mango, banana & berries onto a skewer & display on a large banana leaf. The colorful skewers will look to good to eat & the banana leaf adds a very exotic touch! Also a colorful punch with sherbert scoops add a Hawaiian flare, especially if you serve them in coconut or tiki cups.

I agree kidsnclutter on this one. Its not so much the food as the presentation. For really inexpensive Hawaiian decorations, you cannot beat Oriental Trading Company! Coconut shaped glasses, fancy toothpicks, serving platters and bowls - the possibilities are endless. And if you can find a recipe for anything sweet and sour - chicken could be relatively inexpensive cut into small chunks and served ove rice or on toothpicks as an appetizer - anything with pineapples works. A lovely fruit salad with coconutwould also go a along way. Have fun!

If you like the idea of serving food in the child's new sand buckets but don't want the food to contact the bucket, line the bucket with a large food storage bag (not ziploc type) & fill that w/ the food, allow the edges of the bag to fold down over the top of the bucket if they are long. Ok, someone else's turn...

An entree similar to the baked ham/pineapple can be made with purchased precooked frozen meatballs, you might want to omit the pineapple chunks, or maybe not, good either way. Do omit the ground clove spices though & the sauce should be a bit thicker. You can substitute orange juice for the pineapple juice if not using pineapple chunks. You could also serve a nice big tropical fruit salad, all or part of which can be purchased ready to serve. You can buy ready to serve & add some fresh fruits to make it look/taste even better. Drink fruit juices, or if appropriate, tropical mixed drinks either alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Once you have your menu planned, aim for some super "presentations"...the way the food is presented to those at the party can go a long way to making the food look appealing. Think of slightly or boldly unusual ways to serve the food, as long as it's sanitary! Serve chips or pasta salads in new & washed children's sand buckets w/ the shovels still dangling from the sides or use the shovels as the serving spoon. Place fake tropical flowers on the edges of serving platters & on the table. Use a hawaiian print tablecloth. Think of what type of items suit the crowd at the party, use them to your advantage. From sand buckets to flowers to surf/boogie boards, new flip flop shoes, bikinis or guys swim suits hanging around, or mix & match any of these! HAVE FUN!

Cubed or sliced ham (boneless ham, not deli lunch meat) and pineapple chunks baked in the oven...serve in a big foil pan. Instead of bottled sauce, use this easy mix of the canned pineapple's juice, brown sugar, honey, guess on the amounts. Can add a bit of ground clove or pumpkin pie/all spice for nice flavor. Microwave the sauce about 2 minutes 80% power, just long enough to thicken it a little bit, or simmer it on the stove. It can be fairly liquid & still work very well. Pour over ham & bake, add pineapple chunks, stir, finish baking. Baste with the sauce in the pan as ham is baking to create good flavor & keep the ham moist. YUM!
