Request: Cleaning a Dooney and Bourke Purse
Archived on 02/07/2010
My bag is a light cream color with black polka dots, and black leather trim. I tried unsuccessfully for a year to get the bag professionally cleaned. Out of sheer desperation, I finally tried a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser sponge (by then I was ready to throw the bag out).
Be sure to dampen the sponge. I started gently, but then the lack of patience got the best of me, so I applied a lot of pressure (trying to move the sponge in one direction across the fabric). To my amazement, the bag looks almost new. The Mr. Clean sponge cost about $3, and was well worth every penny and then some.

I think my Dooney and Bourke bag was sitting on the wet mat of my car floor and now there is a big stain on the back of it. I think the fabric is cotton. I just need to get the stain out, please help.

RE: Cleaning a Dooney And Bourke Purse
Hi queendesi91, we NY gals need to stick together! There's a product here in the UK called Dr Beckmann's Dry Clean Only (http://www.dr-beckmann.co.uk/dry-clean-only.asp) that works great. I used it on the inside of my Dooney wristlet. I think you have something similar in the States called Dryel? I've never used that though. However, you can probably get the Dr Beckmann's on EBay and get it shipped over. It costs (pounds) 3.98 (about $6) in the supermarkets here (so don't be fooled into paying a lot for it). And test it first on a small obscure area just to make sure it will not wreck the color. Hope this helps? (09/04/2009)

A pen in my purse leaked out leaving a huge dark blue stain inside in the cell phone pocket. I washed it with hand soap and it came off completely. I was so happy it came off. I had previously called about 3 cleaners and they wouldn't do it. (06/09/2008)

How do I clean my Dooney and Bourke fabric bag?

RE: Cleaning a Dooney & Bourke Purse
Note: for any fabric purse, tote, shoes or other accessories - Spray them with Scotchgard or other fabric spot repellent before wearing to avoid stains! If if you get soil on it, it will be much easier to blot it off, if the fabric has been treated. (Just watch out to AVOID spraying the leather trim!) (10/29/2007)

I attest to the Saddle Soap to clean Dooneys but to keep my new Dooney looking great long term I use the Stain repellent and Cleaner set from Journey's shoe store. I use it on the WHOLE purse...even the vachetta leather, canvas and inside linings. It doesn"t stain or leave an odor. It makes future cleaning a breeze too. It was an experiment at first but now I swear by it. (12/05/2007)

Go to your nearest Janitorial store. They have tons of products to clean anything off of anything. The best store I have been to is Gases Plus, they have people who know what they are selling and what will work on what. Take the bag in with you when you go. They have an awesome product that will take out ink and permanent marker. Good luck girls, don't give up! (01/17/2008)

Cleaning Vachetta Leather: Louis Vuitton, Dooney & Bourke Purse
I used to work as a sales clerk in a shop that sold handbags and repaired handbags and shoes. Unless you don't mind the color changing, you do NOT want to use any product for leather cleaning or water repelling on Vachetta leather (meaning untanned, minimally processed leather). The reality is that Vachetta, like nubuck and suede, is very delicate and there is little you can do once it is soiled.
Leather cleaning and conditioning products are made with the assumption that you are applying it to tanned leather (meaning leather that has has been dyed and has some form of wax or glossy finish). Water repellents and conditioners will darken the light Vachetta as will most cleaners. For this reason, Lanolin is not suitable for Vachetta.
The thing that most people worry about are water stains, but in reality greasy spots from hand lotion or other such source may cause more of a problem by attracting dirt (resulting in a streaky or blotchy looking patina). By contrast, pure rainwater is distilled (free of minerals). Consequently, pure rainwater will usually dry without leaving any mark (providing you leave it be). The exception is water that is dirtied by dripping off a roof or the top of a car and down on to your bag. Runoff carries dirt and WILL stain. For this reason, owners of Dooney & Bourke IT bags and Louis Vuitton handbags should think twice before carrying their precious handbags on a day that rain may be in the forecast. Keep in mind, also, that tap water may also leave a mark due to the high mineral content. Salt water will cause similar damage by leaving salt deposits on the leather. So if you clean the coated fabric portions of a Dooney & Bourke or Louis Vuitton handbag using the Ivory soap method, one tip I would add is to use distilled water. In this way, if it splashes over on the Vachetta, it is less likely to leave mineral deposits behind.
All of what I've written so far applies to the very specific type of cowhide leather used in Louis Vuitton monogram canvas bags and the Dooney & Bourke IT bag line (and select Liz Claiborne, Coach and Italian handbags). Unless you are dealing with suede, nubuck or minimally treated sand color leather, using products to clean, condition or repel water is, however, perfectly safe for all weather leather, glove leather and pebble leather (or any other form of treated leather with a glossy, waxy or satin finish). The one exception is scuff marks. Conditioning products may darken down the spots that are rubbed raw and make them appear even more obvious.
The key to all leather care is prevention. I have heard people swear by Apple and other products, but there is one rule of thumb to keep in mind before experimenting with a costly handbag: If the manufacturer doesn't recommend a specific method, cleaning or conditioning product, you are risking your bag by using it. If the condition of your high-end handbag really bothers you, the best approach is to send it back to the manufacturer and let them clean and/or refurbish it.

RE: Cleaning a Dooney & Bourke Purse
Just a "heads up" to other cleaning freaks, take it easy on this one....I used the Ivory soap/toothbrush method posted from a previous entry where the advice came from a salesperson @ Macy's. It may work if you are gentle, but I got carried away & went scrubbing away like a mad woman. By "rinse" I pretty much held the purse under running water to get all the soap off. Needless to say the leather trim dyed the fabric on the purse. So, remember "gently" means "gently". (09/19/2007)

I have used simple dish soap and water which takes the dirt right off. I got this advice from a salesperson at the mall. It took the ballpoint pen off as well. I had no problem getting it off.

If it's a matter of faded black leather - use black leather shoe polish - buff to a high shine - you could also try liquid shoe polish. (03/13/2007)

My Dooney and Bourke is the white bucket bag with the colored DB on it and has yellowed. I've tried just some mild soap and water but i don't know what to really use. I want to use it again this summer so if anyone knows how to clean it so it is white again that would be great! (05/07/2007)

Cleaning a Dooney and Bourke bag is not all that hard. All I had to do was take a warm damp wash cloth and a bar of soap and rub onto the fabric. Mine came clean in just a few minutes. It really does work. (05/31/2007)

I went to Macy's to learn how to clean my mini bubble bag, and the lady at Macy's had a whole book on how to clean my purse, you use a bar of ivory soap and a clean toothbrush and white towel.
1. Run bar of soap under worm water
2. rub toothbrush on soap
3. gently scrub bag
4. rinse with water lightly, then dry as much as possible with white towel.
*don't let the soap sit on the purse for more than 2 min! GOOD LUCK! (06/17/2007)

I have a tan bubble bucket bag and the bottom was really dirty, I used some dawn dish soap, and a white cotton towel, lightly cleaned it and dabbed the soap off with water, and it came clean, and looks brand new. I'll keep doing that. (08/04/2007)

I have a baby blue Dooney that I left in the trunk of my car at an event recently. The next day, my boyfriend put a drill in the trunk on top of my purse leaving several black grease marks on it. I used the ivory soap/toothbrush method and it really does work. It even removed the grease from the light brown leather on the sides without harming it. (08/27/2007)

How to Care for Your Dooney & Bourke Handbag
I found the following article at qvc.com under care and cleaning:
Classic All-Weather Leather
All-Weather Leather products should be gently wiped with a water-dampened cloth. Difficult stains can usually be removed with water and a mild soap. Stains that contain dye, such as lipstick or ink, should not be treated with cleaning agents or leather creams. The oils in such products loosen the pores of the leather, defeating the shrinkage process that makes All-Weather Leather impervious to moisture. The leather trim is not treated in this manner and can be cared for with any quality leather balm or cream.
Signature Fabric
All signature fabric can be cleaned with a water dampened cloth and a bar of Ivory soap, if necessary. No creams or cleansers should be applied to any leather surfaces; they have been treated for water repellency through a ScotchGuard process.
Cabriolet
With its built-in resistance to staining, Cabriolet cloth can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth or a soft bristle brush used very gently. For greasy or more stubborn stains, use a damp, soft cloth or brush, along with a mild bar soap. The "naked" leather trim on the Cabriolet bags is vegetable tanned, which encourages a deeper, richer color and sheen as it ages. Emollients, such as creams, oils or polishes, may alter this natural aging process and cause unintentional discoloration. Water spots and natural leather markings simply blend into the uniform honey color of the leather.

I used to sell motorcycle leathers. What we used to clean and treat the leather jackets, vests, etc, with is hand lotion that contains lanolin.
No need to buy any expensive leather lotions. This not only cleans and softens the leather but it also protects it against moisture from rain, etc. If your purse ever gets wet, allow it to dry and then re-treat it with the hand lotion containing lanolin. Hope this helps. (08/01/2005)

RE: Cleaning a Dooney & Bourke Purse
According to Doony & Bourke instructions that come inside of purse, wipe with a damp cloth or you can use mild soap & water. They recommend using nothing with oil in it (like leather cleaner) as that will discolor the leather. I have a D&B purse also and have a few ballpoint ink stains on it - however, instructions say these type of stains, or lipstick stains, cannot be removed. (01/20/2006)

RE: Cleaning a Dooney & Bourke Purse
After reading Wolf's post I went and looked at my Saddle Soap that I just bought and surprise! It contained lanolin. I use Kiwi Saddle Soap because it's easy to use and inexpensive. The back of the tin says this:
"Kiwi Saddle Soap is a traditional blend of ingredients which cleans, softens and preserves smooth leather. It contains a fine soap to thoroughly clean away dirt and grime, even salt stains. Kiwi Saddle Soap is formulated with glycerin and lanolin to make leather soft and supply, with a quality wax for added protection.
Directions: Remove excess dirt with a stiff brush or damp cloth. Rub surface of Kiwi Saddle Soap with a moist cloth to develop lather. Rub well into leather. Wipe off excess lather with a damp cloth. Repeat procedure if necessary. When leather is dry, buff with a soft cloth to develop luster. Not for use on suede."
So, I guess lanolin is good for leather cleaning but I would drop into Wal-Mart or any general store and buy some Saddle Soap since it's so cheap. I paid a few dollars for it. Hope this helps!
