Cake for Wild Birds in Winter Months

Many of us enjoy to feed in the spring and summer birds. Making these cakes is a great way to feed them during the winter months too.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. peanut butter
  • 1 lb. oatmeal
  • 1 lb. lard
  • 1 lb. corn meal

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a pan and let dry until hard. Do not bake. Leave these cakes around your yard.

I do not buy or use lard. Do you think that this could be made with vegetable shortening (like Crisco)?
Thanks.

Crisco and lard are basically the same stuff. Yes, use the Crisco. My mom used to make about the same recipe for the wild birds but not using the peanut butter, by using the grease where she'd fried meats.

It all works.

The reason I ask is that I'm vegetarian and I do not buy or use lard, which is rendered beef or pork fat. I asked about Crisco because it is a vegetable shortening, so I'm glad that I can use it in this recipe. Thanks!
