The reason I ask is that I'm vegetarian and I do not buy or use lard, which is rendered beef or pork fat. I asked about Crisco because it is a vegetable shortening, so I'm glad that I can use it in this recipe. Thanks!

Crisco and lard are basically the same stuff. Yes, use the Crisco. My mom used to make about the same recipe for the wild birds but not using the peanut butter, by using the grease where she'd fried meats. It all works.

I do not buy or use lard. Do you think that this could be made with vegetable shortening (like Crisco)?
