I don't think lip gloss is made out of whale sperm, possible the blubber is from a sperm whale.

Hi there! I'm with you. I cant find any information on lip gloss. But I know that the first lip gloss was made by max factor in 1930. He also invented lipstick and the mascara wand. His purpose for the lip gloss was so that the lips of actresses in films would be shiny and standing out. Hope I helped.

I think lipgloss and lipstick are the same thing and I know that because they are both made of the same thing, even though lip gloss doesn't have it's color. Well, some have color.

Have you ever actually looked up the ingredients? Lipgloss is mostly made of different waxes and flavoring. Although the lipgloss from Elf cosmetics main ingredient can be lethal in large doses. Pretty interesting.

RE: Lip Gloss
Here's a whole BUNCH of lip balm & lip gloss recipes... some are harder than others, some have more ingredients than others ... but have fun choosing, I'd suggest first following one of the below recipes, then after you have it down pat... make up your own... The trick being that some waxes & oils are harder than others... say for example if you needed to thin a mixture down, you'd use olive oil, to thicken & harden up a bit, use bees wax or palm oil... Coconut oil turns to liquid around 80 degrees... so it melts in the sun...
Here's a SUPER EASY way to make lip balm: http://parentingteens.about.com/cs/recipesforkids/l/blkidscookt78.htm
All you need is:
1 Tablespoon Petroleum Jelly 1 Tablespoon Aloe Vera Gel 1 1/2 teaspoons Coconut Oil 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Heres another lip balm recipe: http://altmedicine.allinfo-about.com/howto/lipgloss.html
all you need are these ingredients & a few tools
2 tablespoons coconut oil 1 tablespoon cocoa butter 2 teaspoons beeswax 10-20 drops jojoba oil Optional - drops of honey or flavoring or vitamin E oil ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This one is my favorite, it's from the DIY show "Creative Juice" http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/cr_ba ... cle/0,2025,DIY_13744_5297905,00.html
Materials: 2 tsp. beeswax 2 Tbsp. plus 1 tsp. oil (grape seed, olive, avocado or hemp) 1 tsp. honey vitamin E capsule essential oil or cake flavorings lip balm containers disposable plastic pipettes packing tape optional: old lipstick & lip balm filling tray ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a recipe for lipgloss where you only need the microwave and an old stick of lipstick: http://www.goodnuke.com/recipes/lipgloss.htm
Larger amounts may be made, but heat gently to soften only. Also, any flavor of candy oil may be used for taste. For example...chocolate or peppermint. Place in a small unique container and it makes a wonderful gift. A brighter color may be achieved by adding a bit more lipstick.
2 tablespoons petroleum jelly 1/4 teaspoon lipstick, any color 4 drops cinnamon oil Place petroleum jelly in small microwave container. Top with lipstick.
Microwave for 20-30 seconds on High power (100%), or until mixture has softened. Blend well. Mix in cinnamon. Store in small container.
Here's 3 more lip gloss recipes including one made with kool-aid: http://www.showmomthemoney.com/MomZone/lip-gloss-recipes.htm
Fruity Lip Gloss -- Made with Kool-Aid!
2 tbsp. solid shortening 1 tbsp. fruit-flavored powdered drink mix (Kool-Aid) 35 mm plastic film container
Mix shortening and drink mix together in a small microwave-safe container until smooth. Place container in the microwave on high for 30 seconds until mixture becomes a liquid. Pour the mixture into a plastic film container or any other type of small airtight container. Place the fruity lip gloss mixture in the refrigerator for 20 to 30 minutes or until firm.
Mix the ingredients in a glass bowl, and microwave for 1 - 2 minutes. Pour into container.
Heal Sores Balm
3 oz almond oil 2 tsp pure honey 1/2 oz beeswax 1 tsp tea tree oil Melt all together and stir while cooling.
Cranberry Lip Gloss
1 tablespoon sweet almond oil 10 fresh cranberries 1 teaspoon honey 1 drop of vitamin E oil
Mix all the ingredients together in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for a couple of minutes or until the mixture just begins to boil. (Bowl may also be heated in a pan of water on a stovetop). Stir well and gently crush the berries. Cool mixture for five minutes and then strain through a fine sieve to remove all the fruit pieces. Stir again and set aside to cool completely. When cool, transfer into a small portable plastic container or tin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lip gloss made with parafin wax: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070508013422AAtCTTG ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---> The URL below is LOADED with a BUNCH of VERY COOL lip gloss recipes, Take a look! http://www.idea-queen.com/lip-gloss.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a small book you can buy for only $5.... called: 30 Lip Gloss Recipes For You To Make http://store.payloadz.com/str-asp-i ... _You_To_Make_eBooks_-end-detail.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----> A NOTE: please go to the URL's I provided for more information... I am simply providing the ingredients, so you can decide at a glance what recipe you may want to try... Some recipes are for lip-BALM, some are for lip-GLOSS.... (the difference being, lip-BALM is supposed to HEAL the lips & lip-GLOSS is just to make the lips shiny with color & gloss & balm may both taste good too....
*** But please go to the URL's to get the FULL & complete directions! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Making A salve is almost like making lip balm: ---> When I make a healing salve, I take the ingredients: Olive oil, bees wax, & the healing herbs I choose to use (like calendula for example) & bake it in a Pyrex glass bowl with a lid in a low oven of about 200 deg. for about 4 hours or so... then strain off the herbs, add several capsules of vitamin E to the partially cooled mix... Then finally add about a tea spoon of "Tincture of Benzoin" & stir in... The tincture of Benzoin is a natural way to preserve the herbal healing salve. Stir everything well & pour into small jars.
*** You wouldn't need to bake your ingredients for that long (I only do it to get the goodies from the herbs I use)... but as long as you use a glass or an enamel pot (with no holes or scratches in the enamel) & cover it tightly... you can make the whole thing up in the oven at a low temp...
---> Have someone you trust take it from the oven while it's warm (NOT HOT) as it's VERY dangerous while hot & can burn you very BADLY! Then stir, & add a bit of Vitamin E if you like & a few drops of your favorite flavor of essential oil... (I like orange or lemon)... then just stir & pour into small containers.
---> Keep the extras in the fridge for longer shelf life & keep out of the sun!

Whales & Beauty
Those two things don't seem to relate, right? Well unfortunately they are tightly bonded. Until very recently, I'm talking a couple years tops and some still do this, major cosmetic companies purchased whale blubber from the fisherman who hunted them. What for? They would strained the fat and use it as the moisturizing and solidying ingredient in lip products. So you and I were rubbing a dead animals fat on our mouths. SICK! Put that in your project. And make sure you only buy products that are animal product and testing free.

Check into the ingredients in several big name lipglosses. For example... Carmex, which a lot of people use, contains salycilic acid which is actually a drying agent, so it actually dries out your lips which just makes you use more. You can do a poll to find out what the favorite lipgloss is (collect data). I agree with what has been said about the scientific process. What exactly are you trying to find out about lipgloss??? What is the point you are trying to make with your presentation??? Keep those things in mind and you will do great.

Contact a couple of the companies, either by phone (most companies will offer an 800 number) or by email. If you have time, a written letter will work as well and when they respond you'll have the response in writing so to speak!

I agree with Allison, 1/2 of winning is presentation.....you could also show the contents by getting a lip gloss kit or look for recipes on the internet to create it as your "experiment"......you could also do some comparison experimenting between lip gloss, chapstick, carmex, blistex and such....showing the benefits of each toward health, beauty, drying effect, moisurtization, protection, prevention and things of that nature.....I work with the developmentally disabled and at work we use chapstick and carmex to heal cracked lips. cold sores, even to put on elbows that lean on set spots in wheel chairs it helps because these are things clients can carry with them and not be concerned if anyone can get hurt if they get into the wrong hands like precriptions meds...many people need the extra moisturization because the meds they take internally for other conditions cause drying effects to lips and such....we also use lip gloss because everyone likes to look pretty too..... Good luck with your project...

I don't have information about lip gloss, but I DO have information about winning a science fair. I just wanted to remind you that to win a science fair, you have to go beyond presenting information and do an experiment. Presenting background information is only a small part of a winning science fair project. Make sure you listen carefully when your science teacher explains the scientific method. He or she should tell you about forming a hypothesis, performing the experiment with a control group and an experimental group, recording results, and forming a conclusion. It is great that you are looking for information about lip gloss, but the REALLY important thing to be looking for is an EXPERIMENT to do involving lip gloss. I am a high school math and chemistry teacher, and I won awards at 2 science fairs in middle school-- trust me on this. Good luck!
Oh wait... maybe this will help-- I use lip gloss on my knuckles when they get really dry and my skin cracks in the winter... and inside my nose, too. I know that's gross, but it helps when the air in the house is very dry due to cold weather and my nose hurts!
