If possible, wait to buy most things after school starts when school supplies go on sale.

I just got a bunch of boxes of Crayola brand crayons for .20 a box. They are the 24 ct. I put aside to be used for Christmas or Valentine gifts later.

Actually, I have noticed the opposite in my area. I buy mass quantities of school supplies before school starts, when they are on sale. The spiral notebooks that go for a dime right now become 89 cents a piece after August ends. I just picked up a case of 24 for $2.40, which should last my kids the rest of the school year!
