We have an old stove in the house we just bought and it cooks above the noted temperature. Does anyone know a way to correct the temperature gauge without having to call an expensive repairman?

If your oven seems to cook to fast, or too slow, take the oven temp.
knob off and look at the back of it. You may see a screw. If so,
unscrew, or screw, just a bit and then put back on and try again.
Keep doing this until your oven heats they way you want it to.

First you need to get yourself an accurate oven thermometer. You can get them at Lowe's or Home Depot reasonably priced. Place in oven according to directions. Pull off the knob that adjusts oven temp. There will be a little dial under it with tiny notches on it . Turn the little dial back one notch at a time till the temp reads the same temp as the number on the dial. Remember to allow enough time for the temp to adjust between tries. I learned this from a repairman.
