Baked Tortilla Chips

I love to deep fry my own corn and flour tortilla chips, but the healthier option is to bake them ;-) All you have to do is cut the tortillas into chip size wedges and bake in a single layer at 350 degrees F, turning once, on a baking sheet until golden brown. It depends on whether they are corn or flour and your oven, but it generally takes anywhere between 5 to 20 minutes. Once baked, allow to cool for about five minutes before serving.

Recipe: Baked Tortilla Chips

Baked Tortilla Chips
These baked chips are the perfect way to use stale or leftover flour tortillas. You can control the sodium and add any seasonings you like for custom tortilla chip flavors.

These chips have a hearty flavor, but the texture is best suited for creamy dips.

Ingredients:

  • 6 flour tortillas
  • vegetable oil or vegetable oil cooking spray
  • salt

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.*

Lightly brush or spray the tortillas with oil. Sprinkle one side of the tortillas with a very light dusting of salt. Stack the tortillas and carefully cut in half. Make two diagonal cuts, like an ”x”, to form six wedges.

Spread the tortilla wedges in a single layer on each pan.

Bake until crisp, about eight to ten minutes. Remove the pans midway through baking and turn the chips over. Rotate the pans so the flour tortilla chips bake evenly.

Transfer the baked tortilla chips to a wire rack to cool.

*If you have a crisper pan, skip the parchment paper and there is no need to turn the chips over during cooking.

RE: Baked Tortilla Chips

Thank you for this recipe. I saw this on GMA but they didn't say how long to bake and what temp to bake. Now I know. Thanks! (09/25/2009)
