I've just created a Spatini website to serve as a clearinghouse of information and also as a collection point for recipes I'm compiling in a Spatini cookbook. The site has lots of information about how we all can help to bring back Spatini.

I am so disappointed that you took the Spatini Spagheti Sauce off the market....WHY? My family loved this with meatballs, as a family dinner with pasta, or just anytime. Please BRING IT BACK. What a mistake you made. My first 20 years of marriage was sauce with Spatini and when you discontinued it I had to tell my hubby that I didn't exactly make the sauce from scratch. Bummed

(submitted via email) There have been a number of emails on your site regarding Spatini Spaghetti Sauce. Company was sold to Unilever who sold it to Lawry's who sold it to McCormick . Alan Wilson is the president/CEO of McCormick. I have sent him an email requesting them to reinstate this product. I would suggest everyone who is interested, that they write snail mail or send email

I recently went to Lawry's website (www.lawrys.com). The have a NEW RECIPE link added to the web site They ask that you post a recipe that includes a Lawry's ingredient. Why not everyone post their favorite SPATINI Recipe. Maybe that would get their attention, nothing else sees to be. Oh Make Sure You Use SPATINI In The Title Of Your Recipe!!!

I hadn' had Spatini in decades and decades. My mom used to make our spaghetti with it. I remembered it when I was doing a writing exercise with my class about childhood food memories. We used to sing the jingle, and our cocker spaniel would howl along with us. So, now that I'm older than my mom was when she used to make it for us, I went online to see if anyone else remembered Spatini, and found that it had recently been discontinued. I purchased a box on ebay so that I could experience the wonderful flavor a few more times before it goes away forever. But i'll also try the recipes several of you have thoughtfully provided. As another writer suggested, Lawry, why not just offer it online? Why lose a great customer base?

I sent an e-mail to Lawry's and they responded. This is their response.
"The product you have contacted us about has been discontinued. We are sorry that we do not have any remaining stock.
Our company's goal is to provide consumers with a variety of products to meet their needs and preferences. As you know, marketing is a complex function, and many business factors are taken into consideration before discontinuing a product. Before a product becomes available at the retail level, much time and expense is involved in perfecting the formulation, consumers focus testing, and marketing support. It truly saddens us when we must discontinue a product. However, consumer demand is a major factor. When the level of demand is insufficient to ensure that consumers receive high quality products at an affordable price, the product may be discontinued.
We apologize that this product is no longer available and hope you will continue to enjoy our products." This is their response.

Try this for a quick and easy faux spatini mix. Take one package of Good Seasons Italian salad dressing and recipe mix,(this will already have your onion and garlic powder in it. Add 1 tsp. of light brown sugar and than add a pinch of crushed red pepper. Make sure it's not old. I think that's the zing in spatini. You can put this through a blender. Use fresh onions and fresh minced garlic in your sauce or meat loaf recipes instead of adding extras to the powder. Keep it simple. No need to store. If you have a smidgen of spatini left over put them side by side and taste. Thank you to everyone who had an idea and shared. The company's apparent disconcern should not be a factor in our collective efforts to crack the spatini code. Today is the day to make the kettle sing.

For those adventurous cooking souls out there that asked for a scanned image of the Spatini package so they could try and replicate the recipe, i've attached an image showing the back of box with nutritional facts and side of box with ingredients. info from the front of the box is "3 envelopes, each makes 1 pint" net wt of the box is 2.4 OZ (68g)
If you are successful in duplicating the recipe, shoot me a note. I'm Thumbs at a service called optonline which is a dot net not a dot com. spam me and I'll hunt you down and pee on your daffodils. [g]
Hope this helps. and GOOD LUCK! I look forward to hearing from someone that is successful.

Maybe Lawrys/Unilever will get another spaghetti sauce made in China, like everything else in this country. Perhaps that's where their new sauce mix is made, for all I know. If something's any good, you can bet it will be discontinued. Anybody remember the "new Coke" and what a miserable flop that was? I doubt there's anything so expensive in Spatini that would make it unprofitable to manufacture. It's just corporate greed. "They" want us all to buy tomato-flavored high-fructose corn syrup, a.k.a. spaghetti sauce in jars, and that stuff is too foul to eat. Someone who's any good at these things should submit any remaining Spatini to a lab and have it analyzed for ingredients and distribute the recipe.

I should have added that if SON OF SPATINI does, indeed, have the original recipe, and his dad did make it, I would think that the greatest legacy his dad could have would be to share the recipe with all of those that have been using it for years! With the huge numbers of people that would remember his kindness, what better legacy could a son leave for his father? After all, Lawrys has repeatedly stated they would never make it again!

After reading all this (and I, too miss not having Spatini) I note with interest that no one still having a package of it has gone to the trouble to post the ingredients in the order listed nor have they posted the nutritional data that might allow any of us to come close to duplicating the recipe. I know I would welcome seeing a front and back scanned image of an original envelope as a starting point to recreate an acceptible copycat version. Even the package contents weight offers some idea of the quantities when we also have ingredient ordered listings, and the nutritional information offers ideas as to the quantity by knowing sodium and other listings.
I also got essentially the same runaround as all of you others did when contacting the company. Best thing we can do is to keep the pressure on then until some forward looking executive makes a favorable decision. Letters, Emails, phone calls in a high enough volume will eventually provide enough pressure, but we can't let up.
Now that I have found you, I will continue to monitor for whatever information I can use to begin putting together a decent copycat creation.

I just called the Lawry's complaint line and spoke to a customer representative. She explained that the Spatini product was discontinued because the stores were not ordering it due to lack of demand. She added, "The young people want spagetti sauce that they can heat up out of a jar." The other reason is that the price of the product would increase to $20-$25.00 per box because of the seasonings. The customer rep suggested that I try the "Lawry Spagetti Mix" and I can also order it on line. I told her I wanted the Spatini Mix! I am willing to pay more for the product because I can make alot of spagetti sauce with one small box so it would pay for itself. Why can't Lawry package the Spatini mix (according to demand) and sell it on line since there is not a great demand for it? The customer rep said she would pass on my suggestion and comments to the marketing department.

I spoke to a rep from Lawry's on October 22, 2007. The rep informed me of two reasons why Spatini was discontinued. One possible reason was poor sales ( I doubt this was the problem.) The second possible reason was the cost of the ingredients to make the spice mix was too high to continue marketing. I feel this was the reason it was taken off the market. I also inquired whether the recipe was for sale, this would be an excellent opportunity for spice giant McCormick's to purchase and remarket Spatini, I was told that the recipe was not for sale. I was also told that there are no current plans to bring the spice mix back too the market.

Please bring Spatini back. It has been used in our family for over 25 years. I have shipped it to my mother and sister for years since they cannot get it in their states. Pasta with 'Spatini' has become our family's 'comfort food' over the years. There is never a family gathering without spaghetti with meat sauce using Spatini. If it goes away permanently, this will be a sad closure to a chapter in our family history. Please keep it!

Close, but wayyyyyy too salty! Can't be right, 2 tsp's of salt PLUS 2 tsp. of all seasoned salt? I tried it, and almost choked, it might work with just the 2 tsp. seasoned salt, omitting the 2 tsp. of regular salt. ps call lawry, owned by unilever, 1-800-9lawrys,,,,,i think, the number is on the spatini box, which has been discontinued. I just found out this was discontinued, I am so sad. My recipe is as follows. I can use all other ingredients without the Spatini but it will be missing that added kick. My ex husband told me that another company will be making a product that will be close to Spatini. When I know what it is I will post the information.
- 1 medium jar of Ragu
- 1 small can of hunts tomato sauce
- 1 small can of tomato paste
- salt & pepper
- garlic powder (lots)
- oregano
Meatballs: ground meat mix with only garlic powder and form them and cook n sauce
Cook everything for 45-60 minutes
Serve over pasta
This is to die for!

I tried the recipe for Spatini above, and also found it salty. (And I already eliminated the regular salt)
I tried a bunch of recipes and think I came pretty darn close to making my own Spatini. Had some tonight and it was very very close.

We want Spatini back. I personally have been using it for the 42 years I've been married and my mother before that. I tried last week with other spices and my son said " What's wrong with the spaghetti, it has no taste".
Borden's did that with Creamettes, now it's back on the market. (02/20/2007)

We too have been using Spatini Spices for more than 40 years. We dont know what to do either. We have some on the shelf in Arizona but none on the east coast. We need the receipe! We should contact the company and ask them to post it on the net--it is the right thing to do. HELP!
We think it has sugar, salt, onion power, garlic power, potato starch, beet power for color, yeast extract, and maybe ground oregano, and ground basil. Here is the phone number 1800 952-9797 (02/25/2007)

I have also used Spatini for over 25 years and was absolutely crushed to find out yesterday that it had been discontinued. This was only after the 4th grocery store that I ventured to advised me of this information. What I did find that was almost as good as Spatini was McCormicks packet of spices which retails for approximately 89 cents a pack. The family loved it and never realized the differece. (02/26/2007)

I have been everywhere looking for this beloved family favorite! I wrote an email to Lawry's at their webste WWW. LAWRYS .com I asked them to please do not discontinue it. It is one of the few reminders I still have of my mother who has been gone for twelve years now. I know that many feel the same way. Spatini could never be duplicated!!

I called Lawrys and they said they are telling people to buy the Lawrys dry "original" spaghetii sauce mix. I can't believe how upset I actually am over this. Spatini has been our family secret recipe for hamburger barbque forever! I asked if enough people call might they continue making it again and they said "you never know". Then they tried to get my name and address to send me coupons and such. Didn't know if I could trust it, or if Iwould be on some huge mailing list then. I miss you spatini! (03/01/2007)

Another sad Spatini customer. My mother introduced me to this dry seasoning. I tried 3 different stores to purchase this product and one store manager told me it was discontinued. How can they discontinue a product that's been around for so long. I made meatballs and sauce for my son who came home from college and it just wasn't the same. Maybe Lawry's will read this posting and bring this product back. I miss my mom and I miss this wonderful mix. (03/03/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
Homemade homemade Spatini (tasted very much like the original)
- 6 tsp. brown sugar
- 4 tsp. parmesan cheese
- 4 tsp. onion powder
- 1 tsp. garlic salt
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 2 tsp. basil
- 2 tsp. oregano
- 2 tsp. thyme
- 1 tsp. rosemary
- 1 tsp. sweet paprika
- 1/2 tsp. dill
- 1/2 tsp. taragon
Grind in blender and keep wrapped up in freezer
Use three teaspoons per 6 oz of paste or 15 of sauce
This is not as salty as Spatini. I also added dried minced garlic to the sauce after I started cooking it and a bit of the minced garlic in a jar to give it a fresher taste.
If you add fresh parsley with any dried spice it will intensify the spice and give it a fresh spice taste (03/10/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
Correction to Spatini Recipe posted 3/10/07
Meant, I added some dried minced onion to the sauce (not dried minced garlic) after I started cooking the sauce.
You also might want to add a bit more onion powder after you start cooking the sauce (I didn't want to over do the onion powder in the mix); I liked the sauce with a bit more onion powder (but was also recreating my mom's recipe (which is not all Spatini for seasoning)). Taste it while you are cooking and add more onion powder if you like.
I made spaghetti sauce last night and thought it quite Spatiniesque. The bit of the minced garlic in a jar added did add a bit more kick

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
Hi Mike:
I posted the recipe on here on 3/10/07. (making sure you know, I am not Son of Spatini, was just writing a reply to his posting on here).
It does not taste exactly like Spatini, but it did create a flavorful sauce with some zest to it. I have also tried adding a slice of orange peel to the sauce (not zested up, just put as a slice in during cooking), to give the sauce a bit more zing.
If you don't want to buy all of the individual italian seasonings, just buy them together as italian seasoning. Also, a bit of fresh parsley will freshen up the taste of dry seasonings. And, you may want to add a bit more onion powder and parmesian cheese after you have started cooking the sauce. (03/27/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
That's the problem. Spatini was never marketed properly. It has never been prominently displayed on shelves and there are many times when I've had to spend time looking for it, even in our regular grocery store.
Most people I talk to have never heard of it but once they try it, they're hooked and ask me where they can find it.
Maybe if Unilever knew how to market something properly, we wouldn't have this problem.

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
I found a recipe in Reader's Digest Great Recipes for Great Health that tastes a lot like Spatini.
- 1/2 cup onion flakes (or 1/4 cup onion powder)
- 1/2 cup parsley flakes
- 2 tablespoons dried oregano, crumbled
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon each dried thyme and basil
- 2 teaspoons black pepper
- 2 teaspoons garlic flakes (or 1 teaspoon garlic powder)
- 4 large bay leaves, crumbled fine (it is a myth bay leaves are posionous -- one can also find bay leaf powder)
(IMPORTANT: (You will need to add a tablespoon of Parmesian or Romano cheese for each four teaspoons of the mix AFTER you start cooking -- DO NOT ADD to the mix to store it))
A teaspoon you eat with is usually a real teaspoon... A tablespoon you eat with is 4 teaspoons (so if you measure with an eating tablespoon use one tablespoon plus a teaspoon), or to each 2 teaspoons if you grind the mix in a blender)
(what is in parenthesis above is my added)
Place all ingredients in a 1-pint jar, cover tightly and, shake well to mix. Store in a cool, dark, dry place for up to 2 months. Makes 1 and 1/2 cups (of if you put it in a blender 3/4 cups)
NOTE: This recipe has in it NO salt and less sugar than Spatini (you will need to add salt after you start cooking the sauce, if you like salt)
I put this in a blender and added a bit more onion powder and it was a great substitute.
After you start cooking the sauce, add about a tablespoon of onion flakes if you substitute the onion powder for onion flakes.
Use 4 teaspoons of the mix for each 6 oz can of paste or 12 oz can of sauce
OR
If ground in blender; 2 teaspoons of the mix to each 6 oz can of paste or 12 oz can of sauce.
And again, after you start cooking (or if making meatloaf, after you have added the spice to the meat) add 1 tablespoon of Parmesian or Romano cheese for each 4 teaspoons (or 2 teaspoons if you grind the mix in blender) and then salt to taste (and you may want to add a small bit more sugar (small bit).

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
I have considered contacting the Better Business Bureau and telling them that Lowry is passing of it's Lawry Mix as a substitute for a Spatini.
Lawry has to know it's mix is not similar to Spatini.
Perhaps Americans should boycott all Lawry products until they start conducting better business.
We should use Lawry's bad sales attempt of pushing their Lawry Mix on us and their contempt for the people who have been cooking for with Spatini (a product on the market for 50 years) as an example of bad business practices.

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
I got through to the Lawry's 800 number. While on the phone I asked for an address where I could send my written comments. The address is:
Unilever Consumer Services
920 Sylvan Ave.
2nd Floor
Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632
I sent in my complaint and told them that I for one am boycotting Unilever products (you'd be surprised what all they make) because of the loss of Spatini. Other may wish to do the same... I hope (05/16/2007)

BRING BACK MY SPATINI
The feedback should show the company that Spatini is in great demand, I was in 3 states trying to buy it. Why is it when you find something so good that they up and take it off the market? Shame on you! We still live in America! (05/20/2007)

I and my family have been using this for 3 generations. Soon my son would be using it. I can not tell you how upset we all are. We use this product 5 out of 7 days per wk. We are boycotting all of the products that we use from this company! Bring it back and soon or lose lots of customers. Then you will have to cancel all of your products! (05/22/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
My mother has been using Spatini since I was a baby. I'm so disappointed and upset about this. I just called them to make a complaint and the operator I talked said she was upset about it too since she also used it. She said that stores weren't taking enough demand for it so they stopped ordering it. She also said the only places that would have it now, if they have any, would be Big Lots or discount stores. I'm so annoyed that they would get rid of a product that my family has been using since before I was born. (05/23/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
I am very upset that Spatini is no longer being made. My mother who has been gone for 40 years introduced me to Spatini. My sister, daughter and I used it in all kinds of recipes, not just for spaghetti. I guess the almighty dollar is more important than producing a quality product. (05/29/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
Uggh, so that's why I can't find it anywhere! I have used McCormick's spaghetti sauce mix recently and it is similar. I made my sauce and meatballs for a recent Grad party to RAVE reviews once again. The McCormicks stuff is not easy to find, not every market in my area carries it. Giant Markets so far has been the only place I consistently purchase it at. (06/12/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
I am very sad that I can not find this sauce mix anywhere! I got hooked on it from my then to be mother-in-law and it was THE BEST! Now 17 years later I was still using it and even got my kids hooked on it, who are VERY picky about sauce, well picky in general. They refuse to use any other sauce because it isn't like Spatini. They love it because its plain and just has a great taste, as do I. PLEASE BRING IT BACK, ITS THE BEST! Please let me make my kids happy and me for that matter. (06/13/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
I live in Central PA and the local grocery store here STILL carries Spatini!! Are you speaking of the stuff that comes in a little packet that you mix with your spaghetti sauce, or is this something else?
The grocery store is called WEIS MARKETS, and I'm not sure where you all live that like Spatini, but I believe that Weis has stores in only a few states. (06/14/2007)

I too am very disappointed to discover that Spatini has been discontinued! One of my husband's favorite dishes is Spatini and Spam on pasta. (Chop the Spam into half inch squares, fry, and add to sause. One can of Spam per packet of Spatini.) I have only two envelopes left! AAAAAGGGGGHHHHH! So, now is gone yet another of his favorites. And mine too! (06/14/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
Please put spatini back on our store shelves. I have used it for 37 years. I have never made my spaghetti sauce without it. My family is very upset when I told them we will not be having homemade spaghetti sauce again. Please bring spatini back. Nothing else will ever compare to it. Why in the world would you discontinue a very good product lots of people buy. Please bring SPATINI back!!!! (06/15/2007)

Very Disappointed
I have also used Spatini for over 31 years and was absolutely crushed to find out that it had been discontinued. We live in Texas and would have it shipped by the case from relatives in PA . I used it in a wide varity of cooking and baking dishes. I'm am very disappointed (06/16/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
My mother has been making Spatini spaghetti sauce my whole life, 30 something years! She passed the recipe down to me and now my wife loves it as much as I do. We had to have friends ship it to us here in the west (not available out here), then I found it on Amazon.com and bought it by the case. Now NO MORE SPATINI!?!?!? What will we do?? I just purchased several boxes on ebay at a much inflated price, but it will be well worth it to have Spatini a little while longer :( Just called the Lawry's number 1-800-896-9067 and cried on their shoulder, she said there are no plans to bring it back at this point. I guess all good things must come to an end.... (06/21/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
I was so disappointed when I learned that Spatini is not being made anymore. I am 57 years old and my mother used it when I was a kid. And I have been using it over the past 37 years myself and my children have been using it the last few years in their recipes too. Help! What can we do? Is there anything out there that compares? No. I already know the answer. (06/28/2007)

RE: Spatini Spaghetti Sauce
I just got off the phone with Lawrys. They say they don't plan on making spatini anymore, but they are taking peoples names and forwarding it to the marketing division. If enough of us call them we can try to get Spatini brought back. Its worth a try and it only takes a few moments to call them. Let them know you wont purchase any Lawrys products unless they bring back Spatini. Here is the number you can call. 1-800-745-9232 (07/16/2007)
