A Twist on Making Hamburgers

Bronze Feedback Medal for All Time! 146 Feedbacks

The completed burger.I love homemade hamburgers but I'm not partial to the thick, doughy store bought hamburger buns. To envelope my patty with all the fixings, I toast 2 slices of sandwich bread and cut them round using a 4 inch plate, bowl or most often my funnel.

It works best to cut the rounds after the bread is toasted so the slices don't squish and they go into and out of the toaster easily. Don't butter the toasted bread. I keep the bread cut-offs to use as croutons another time.

And ... I'm reducing my calorie intake. A hamburger bun has about 230 calories and 2 slices of white sandwich bread has about 160 calories.

The benefits I see:

  1. I've always got sandwich bread in the house so don't have to buy buns at about $2.77

  2. My burger is still able to be eaten out of hand and enjoyed

  3. I'm taking in less calories
