Adding Mouthwash to Shampoo

A bottle of mouthwash next to a bottle of shampoo.I have some lovely shampoo that leaves my scalp winter-itchy! Recently, I recalled that Listerine-type antiseptic is a good skin conditioner, so I began using it on my face. I had quite a bit left, so mixed it, half-and-half with my shampoo. I also added some drops of tea tree oil. Now, I have a wonderful shampoo that relieves all the itchiness, and leaves my hair feeling wonderful.

I checked with other websites regarding doing this and the instructions are to wash your hair as you normally do, rinse then mix with mouthwash with water 50/50, apply to hair, leave on for a few minutes and rinse again. No where was it suggested to mix with shampoo.

Good to know, though knowing how lazy I am, I'll probably continue to mix with shampoo; I usually dilute shampoo with water before use, anyway. Thanks for that info.

I mix original Listerine with my shampoo in equal parts about every 6 weeks to 2 months because I sweat in my head alot. I have thick hair so it has a slight stinch. (yuck). Just being honest. I work in a rather hot place. My hair needs it. Ive never had an issue. It cured my scalp fungus too. That's why I originally started using it.

I condition it heavily with a processing cap. Rinse it all out with cool water. Air dry or blow dry depending on the time I have. Flatiron. Add some oil spray. I'm good to go. Hair still healthy. No issues. If a person's hair is already dry and brittle it may not be good tho.

I'm going to try your method of mixing some Listerine with shampoo. I'm also having a problem with itchy scalp.

I have used it full strength applying it with a cotton ball and it helped a lot. I let it set for a minute or so and then washed my hair with Head & Shoulders dandruff shampoo & conditioner with almond oil. It really helped the itching.

I have read that Listerine will make your hair grow. Don't know about that but I could use some extra hair on my head.

Great! I have found a half-n-half mix (listerine/shampoo) works well for me. You might consider adding tea tree oil (20? drops per 16 ounces of mix), and it is readily available at any pharmacy. Good luck.

I'd suggest making a small amount to try it; if it works well for you, great!
