Caring for a Baby Fish

February 8, 2011

Adult and juvenile guppy with aquatic plants against black backgroundI bought a fish yesterday and when I came home today I found about 20 baby fish! Should I separate them or does the mother have to care for them or something? I just don't want her to eat them!

Separate them! Otherwise mom will snack on them when she gets hungry. Most pet stores and some Wal-mart stores sell breeder nets/containers. The best one to purchase is the gauze sleeve that fits over a rectangular frame. It hooks right over the side of your tank like the trays at Sonic and keeps you from needing to maintain separate water heaters, air pumps, etc.

I have baby mollies, they are quite big, and they are eating the mother. What should I do?

Mollies love to nibble. Do you have enough live plants for the baby molies to nibble at instead of the mother?

Typically it is the other way around where mother would possibly eat her babies. But I'd separate them if it isn't working out. Good luck!

I'm from Philippines. A few months ago I bought these fish and recently they just gave birth. What do you call this type of fish and what should I do to take care of their babies?

From what I can see in picture they look like swordtails. You can buy a little mesh nursery to put in tank to keep other fish from eating or attacking them.

Feed them one or two flakes of food twice a day.

I'm freaking out my platy is pregnant and might have babies soon. I don't know if I should put her in a fish trap thing, but I want all the babies to survive.

If you can, put her in a separate tank.

I have a 29 gallon tank for fresh water fish. I think they are tetras. One died so now I have 6 baby fish and one older one. I don't know if it is the mother.
