Check Craigslist for Appliances

AppliancesThis weekend, my old dryer stopped working. We had already decided to replace it instead of repairing it the next time it broke. It had been repaired several times before and certain parts were no longer being manufactured. We planned to go to a local appliance store to check their used appliances but they we already closed for the weekend so that would have to wait until Monday.

After checking prices at the big box stores, my husband went onto Craigslist to see if there was anything available. He found a dryer for $125, including delivery. They would also take our old dryer away. This sounded like a great deal so we made arrangements for delivery in the evening. But my husband kept looking. He found some great deals and we got a replacement dryer from someone in our neighborhood for $25!

There were many washers, dryers and dishwashers for free or almost free. My husband picked up a relatively nice dishwasher, just for the cost of driving to get it. The man was thrilled that he didn't have to put it in the dumpster and it works better than our old broken down one. We only needed to replace the hose ($20). Not too shabby.

There is a risk that the appliances won't work but so far we have had good luck that way. It's easy to order new parts online to replace a broken tray or drawer. We do have to find a way to get rid of our old dryer and dishwasher but it sounds like there are plenty of people who make a good living repairing appliances. I will probably just give them away for free on Craigslist.

Just an update. The dryer has been somewhat problematic. There is a gap that catches strings or other small corners, causing a little staining and damage. But considering it is the coldest part of winter, it's better than hang drying everything. In a few months, we will search out a better dryer, perhaps with a local appliance repair shop.

The dishwasher has been ok, although it is much smaller and noisier than our old one. We have some kitchen remodel plans in the next few years so we will probably try to upgrade at that time. It's saved us from scrimping during the holidays or paying interest on a credit card for the replacements.
