Masking Tape and Shoe Polish Vase - faux shreds and flowers in the vaseDabbing shoe polish onto ripped up pieces of tape on a surface can make it look like cork or leather. I turned this plain glass vase into a weathered vintage looking one using this method. I think it's pretty eye-catching!

Masking Tape and Shoe Polish Vase - supplies

Steps:

  1. Take a long piece of tape or two and wrap it around the base edge of the vase completely.
  2. Masking Tape and Shoe Polish Vase - wrap 1-2 long pieces of tape around the base of the vase

  3. Rip up several pieces of tape so they have jagged edges.
  4. Masking Tape and Shoe Polish Vase - rip up several pieces of tape so that they have raggedy edges

  5. Starting from the bottom, work your way up the vase, overlapping the tape pieces so there are no gaps. I stopped a little before the halfway point.
  6. Masking Tape and Shoe Polish Vase - begin at the bottom and apply tape pieces overlapping as high as you like

  7. Now wrap a piece of tape at the top portion so it's nice and straight. This will be your cut-off point.
  8. Masking Tape and Shoe Polish Vase - wrap a straight piece of tape at the top edge

  9. Working in circular motions, dab on the shoe polish with a rag or paper towel. Get a couple coats on so it is nice and saturated.
  10. Masking Tape and Shoe Polish Vase - working in a circular motion dab on polish, two coats works well to get it saturated

  11. Very gently peel off the top strip of masking tape.
  12. Masking Tape and Shoe Polish Vase - gently peal off the top piece of tape

  13. Now, right above the defined line, carefully slice off the excess unpolished portion of masking tape with your razor blade. Peel those bits off.
  14. Masking Tape and Shoe Polish Vase - peal off any unpolished bits of tape above the line

  15. Brush Mod Podge on to tape and allow to dry completely. This will lock in the colours and the tape. You can make your own Mod Podge by using 3 parts white glue and 1 part water.
  16. Masking Tape and Shoe Polish Vase - apply a coat of Mod Podge

Take an interestingly shaped vase or bottle and make sure it is cleaned out really well inside and out with soap and water. Dry it thoroughly. Then take a roll of regular masking tape start tearing it into small little pieces all the same size.
