Dabbing shoe polish onto ripped up pieces of tape on a surface can make it look like cork or leather. I turned this plain glass vase into a weathered vintage looking one using this method. I think it's pretty eye-catching!

This is a great craft and works really well with little kids. I did it with a class of gr 2s. They covered fancy shaped bottles for father's day.
I just read your directions. We did not cover the tape with Modpog, just left it as is. It wears just fine without. The bottle my son, now 34, made when he was 7, and gifted to his great grandfather, is still fine. It has faded a bit over the years. You can quite nicely skip the final step.

This brings back memories. My daughter was 2 when she decorated a juice can in pre-school and brought it home to me. I still use it today. Back then they didn't have any type of glue to add to the top of the can. I can see where it might be necessary on the glass.
I am now 51. It was the 70s, prime time for decapauge... lol!
I made one of these at age 6 for my grandfather for his birthday that year for his desk pens at his vet practice at a local summer parks day camp. I have always had fine motor coordination issues. Other than latch hook rugs, this is THE ONLY craft project I ever have done that looks like it should!
Fast forward to his death at the age of 85, 10-ish years ago.
Guess what was STILL on his desk? My mom always loved the desk, and created a small memory space for pictures, his awards, diplomas, etc in her home with the desk, guess what is STILL on the desk, filled with old give away pens with his name and old business address on them? :) yup!
I looked this up, because under lockdown I am sheltering with mom and dad... and need some cheap home office storage...and have two large plastic RedVines 3.5 lbs capacity plastic jars with plastic lids.that if given this treatment will hide a multitude of clutter sins for my very visible online desk?
My local grocery has has all the makings... guess what I am doing this weekend and while in interminable meetings by zoom where I am muted and not sharing video to conserve bandwidth?? :)
I also have shoe boxes that may get the treatment as well... bc Hey why not??? Matching storage that looks like I spent 25 bucks per item at home goods on camera or across the room ... lol
Also... modge podge, though not a requirement, gives a more finished look, and texture. You can get matte or gloss... depending upon what you want... while brown shoe polish gives a classic cork/leather scrap look... I would guess that other polishes could give different looks if you want...

I did this nearly 50 years ago when I was a kid. With the other old timers, no modge podge. Yes, it lasted for years, but I would think the modge podge would help protect against moisture or any accidental wetness.
I went looking for instructions on this craft which had a sealer to see which sealer would be used. Grandchildren are getting old enough to make gifts for parents. Thank you for clear instructions.
