Loaf of date bread cut into slices against a white backgroundA very old fashioned recipe that I have used for over 50 years. A great favourite with my family.

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 8 oz. chopped dates

  • 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. bi-carbonate soda (baking soda)
  • 1 3/4 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 egg, well beaten

Cook dates, butter, sugar, and soda in boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Cool. Add well beaten egg and self raising flour, mix well.

Grease or line with baking paper a long narrow tin. Bake in moderate oven for around 3/4 hour (need to check on).

Remove from tin. When cool, slice and spread slices with butter to serve.

Servings: 8-10
Prep Time: 5-10 Minutes
Cooking Time: 40-45 Minutes
