Duct Tape Wasp Nest Decoy

Duct Tape Wasp Nest Decoy - nest under the eavesThis spring I was no sooner enjoying the latest crop of large bamboo stalks than I noticed a menacing wasp nest under construction under my eaves nearby. Putting 2 and 2 together and doing a little research online I came to realize that I was not the only one who was enjoying the bamboo abundance!

Paper wasps were also extremely happy I wanted to help them source material for their nesting! Also online I noticed people were selling "decoy" nests consisting of a small gray bag suspended upside down from a string retailing for $10.00 plus, which purportedly would scare away wasps in a 200 foot radius (because wasps are "territorial" like gangs) . So as usual I wanted to make my own for a princely sum of $2.00!

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. Wrap duct tape around foam football in a spiral, layered pattern.
  2. Poke a half inch or so deep hole in base end of football foam, make this hole appear deep by blackening in with paint or the marker.
  3. Attach a wire to the "top" of the football.
  4. Hang the whole contraption with a thumbtack, nail, etc. under your deck, eave, gutter, tree branch, or where ever you really don't want wasps to nest!

I made one of these and its still doing the job, after 2 years. One thing I did do was yo lightly rub on a little baby powder, to give it a little dull papery look.

I use brown paper lunch bags. Just puff it up and hang - it does work, but is not totally water proof like the duct tape. Wasps are territorial and think the fake is another group and wont invade the territory.

In South Carolina, and we have our share of wasp.
We have been doing the brown bag fake nest for many years. I even have one hanging from the pool handrail over the steps. Wasps do love to stop by the pool for a drink.
