Easy Dusting for the Elderly

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 169 Posts

Dusting down low with cloth on foot.I am pretty diligent in dusting my top surfaces, but there are some of my "low down" areas I just can't reach any more. This morning I was scampering around, dust cloth in hand, doing our desks and decided today is the day the under portion of DH's desk gets dusted. I lowered my chair to the lowest position, draped my blanket fleece dust cloth over my foot and went to work. In just a few minutes time..... Voila! A clean desk!

I do something similar, I use a rollator (walker with wheels and a seat). I sit down on it and I use a soft old towel that doesn't owe me anything. I've stitched it into a three sided bag, and I use some really ugly ribbon (probably from a really old gift), and I tied the envelope closed over my old corn broom. Now I can safely reach the corners and almost underneath my chairs (the old broom doesn't bend enough to get really deep underneath, but if I can't see it, it isn't there!). Don't forget to be safe while doing it, if something hurts, stop.

If something can't be reached, wait until your kids show up and put them to work on a little punch list (screwing in light bulbs that are too high, moving the fridge and stove so that they can get a good cleaning), little things like that were you would be foolish, not to mention dangerous to manage on your own safely.

It's only about a half hour job, and then they can have a nice meal and visit with you.

Oh, and don't forget to have them change your batteries in your smoke detector and your CO2 alarms! You're supposed to do that every time we change the clocks, but I made them do it on Christmas and 4th of July, close enough! Also, make sure that you take your fire extinguisher to the Fire Department to make sure that they are functional and have a good charge. My local Fire Department does this for free for seniors, and a large pan of brownies is a fair trade for these heroes who have been to my home often lately (I'm in bad shape and need help getting up off the floor lately).

Keep on giving us your best "cheat" way to make do around the house!
