Fabric and Button Tic-Tac-Toe Game

Here's a simple little version of the popular game of tic tac toe, also known as noughts and crosses. Of course you can always play this at any time with just a pen and paper, but this pocket game is pretty and fun to carry around. I have used floral fabric. For a boy use plain colours or a more geometric design.

If you have never played before, it is an easy game that even young children can master. You need two players. One player is noughts and the other is crosses. Draw four lines crossing, two horizontally and two vertically. Take turns to draw symbols in the spaces (noughts or crosses) The first person to get three in a row, vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, wins.

For the game featured here, you use the different coloured buttons in place of the written symbols

  1. Fold one square of fabric into thirds and mark the folds with a crease at each end.
  2. Use the creases to guide you to sew 2 lines of back stitch using your embroidery needle and floss. Use all six strands of the floss. Alternatively you could glue narrow ribbon or cord in place.

  4. Do the same in the other direction.
  5. Take your second piece of fabric and lay the two pieces right sides together.

  7. Using the sewing thread and needle, back stitch around three sides with a seam allowance of just a few mm. Use a sewing machine if you prefer.
  8. Now turn down a hem around the opening and stitch in place. You are making a bag.

  10. Snip off any straggling threads.
  11. Turn right side out.

  13. With two more lengths of embroidery floss, make running stitches front and back along the top edge without securing the ends.
  14. Tie the ends together.
  15. Use your little bag to hold the buttons.
  16. Use the buttons to play tic tac toe.
