Feeding a Puppy Recovering from Parvo?

Feeding a Puppy Recovering from Parvo - puppy in a dog bed2 weeks a got we got our new dog and was told she was utd on her shots. This Tuesday she started getting sick, on Friday I realized it was parvo. She was rushed to the vet and he told me to put her to sleep. I wanted to give her a chance, so the vet put fluid under her skin, gave her antibiotics and steroids.

Saturday she was really bad and I thought she was going to die, but Sunday she looked great. She was active, walking around, and playing with the kids. There was no vomiting or bloody diarrhea. She's has been drinking since we got back from the vet so that wasn't an issue. Now we can't get her to eat anything. We tried Pedialyte and she throws up. The vet said to try Gatorade, same thing. We have tried baby food, chicken, rice, wet dog food, dog treats, and mashed potatoes. She will not eat. What can I do? I'm afraid she's going to starve to death. She is a Shih Tzu possibly a mix. Please help.

She is still recovering from Parvo, and it can take up to 5 days for them to start eating again. It is not a good idea to force her to eat. She seems to be doing better and right now you need to keep her hydrated and make sure she is getting plenty of fluids.

If she doesn't like the liquids you are giving her, try just plain water. When my dog had Parvo, he did not eat for 5 days. When he started to eat again, it was a bland diet of basically rice or pasta. He finally started to eat his food again after 7 days. In the beginning, it is hard to make them eat again because they are afraid to vomit again.

You can try feeding her by hand and see if she will lick off your fingers. This is a start. You can also try to make some liquid food for her and use a syringe to feed her. Don't give her too much just a tiny bit at a time.

I would concentrate on having her drink and get rest. Dont worry so much about getting her to eat.
