Green June Bug (Cotinis nitida) Photos

Category Wildlife
The green June bug is found in the eastern United States, particularly in the south. The photo of one on a bit of watermelon gives you a hint to their favorite foods. The beetles love fruit of all kinds, especially overripe fruit, and are responsible for extensive damage. That aside they are also beautiful and fun to watch if you are lucky enough to see one.

Photo Description
My mother and I put a wedge of ripe watermelon outside as an alternative for the hummingbirds to sip juice from. We went outside to tend to the garden and saw this massive June bug feasting on it, rolling around in its juices. The contrasting colours were so cool. It sure was a happy beetle... until our cat had its fun chasing it away. The whole scenario was amusing my dad from behind the garden glass. A fun turn of events!
