Home Repair Assistance for Low Income Families?

I'm a single mother, homeless and living with someone. My uncle passed away and left me a house. It's in terrible shape. I've tried to fix so much, but the city has stopped everything.

I have no income due to a car accident and I can't afford repairs, but the house is falling down and I need help. The city wants to condemn my house, but it can be fixed. I just can't afford it. If you know of some programs or people that I can reach out to please advise. I have 60 days to save our house and nowhere to take my babies. We need this house. Who can help us?

I would reach out to HUD.org, Habitat for Humanity, and local churches.

HUD is an excellent place to start. They offer low interest loans for families that qualify.

  1. There are several other family assistance programs that sound like you can qualify for them.

  3. There is an Asistance 0% benefit that you would qualify for.
  4. You could also qualify for an Incentitive Grant.
  5. For more information on these programs you can check their website. hrrc-ch.org/.../

Once a city condemns your house it will be very difficult to do any repairs - either yourself or a contractor. Even now - after giving you a 60 day notice, it will take a lot of paperwork for anyone to be able to do the repairs. It will be very difficult to get any of the organizations suggested to help you if your house is on notice to be condemned.

  • You may not be able to find someone (any of the organizations suggested) who will even discuss repairing this house as the permits alone will be very costly and difficult to get approval.
  • Apparently the house has not been livable since you inherited it or you would be there now. This is not a good sign.
  • You mentioned babies? How old are you and how many children are you speaking of? Injuries from a car accident - are you able to work?
  • How or who is taking care of you now? How will you pay your housing expenses (utilities) and provide proper food, clothing, schooling supplies, and other things needed by yourself and your children?
  • I feel sure you are enrolled in some of the government programs for families so some of this may be provided (food stamps, Medicaid) but that is not all of the income a family needs.

  • Where is the father in this picture? Does he pay support for the children?
  • All of these programs will ask you most of the above questions before they will even discuss making any type of repairs to your house.

I believe you should consider asking for help with housing rather than trying to make repairs to a potentially condemned house - even if it is your own. There are some good programs for families like yours that find suitable housing and the cost is on a sliding scale - based on your income. Contact your local HUD and find out what can be done.

If you are working, you could apply for a new Habitat home. Check out their web site and see if you qualify.
