Houseplant Identification?

dying houseplantI'd like to know what this is so I can help it survive! It was given to my daughter when she married nearly 10 years ago by a beloved great aunt. And this is all that is left!

I dont know what this plant is, but it appears to be in a large pot. It is a small plant. The dirt looks dark , so is it too wet? Very few plants like that. I would carefully lift the root ball out of the pot it is in and out it in a pot that allows you to put an inch of new dirt around the current root ball. Most likely a smaller pot than what you have. Allow the plant to be pretty dry for awhile, because roots that have been disturbed tend to rot if too wet or cold. Not so dry it suffers tho. The plant looks like it has a high water content, so it is more likely to rot if the roots are wet or cold. Find it a bright spot, but no direct sun. No fertilizer for awhile except a little fish fertilizer. If you have a sprout to spare, you might try to start it in a glass of water. Good luck, miracles happen.
