This really looks like a beetle to me. I would check to see if you have more and if you do it is time to bomb your home or get someone to come in and spray for you.

Are you outside the US? This does not look like bug I have seen in the US.

Do you have an agriculture school in your area? I send photos to my home extension office when I need help IDing critters I have never seen before.

They are quite helpful and kind about helping!

I was looking for something else and came across a picture of a bug like yours and it said it was a lice/louse. Did you ever get yours figured out?

You will need over the counter help as they tend to gather in human hair if that is what it is. I sure hope I am wrong.

Post back with an update!

Thank you for the responses. I live in the UK.
It was dog lice as I have 3 dogs. The critter appeared after my dogs spent a week with a dog boarding person as we were on vacation.

The vets have confirmed that the dogs are clear of any pests and they are on drugs that disrupt the cycle and eventually kill off the bugs. However, I have also washed all their beds, and sprayed the house, so that should be that. The vet was not concerned as they are not human lice (these wont move onto humans), we don't have carpets and the dogs are taking monthly preventatives.
