Identifying Small White Biting Bugs?

I have these tiny white bugs look like tiny grains of salt. On the hardwood floors, as well as, the carpet they look like lint. They are on my mattress encasement, sheets, everything in the house. They look like dust on furniture. I have so many bites that itch, burn, and will not heal. It is a chore to go to bed because I know what's coming. They are all over the house, bathrooms and kitchen. What are these things and how do I get rid of them? They are even on my pets.

Unknown bugs can often be eliminated on household carpets, upholstery and the like with dry 20 mule team Borax. Leave down for 2 weeks before vacuuming. 2 to 2 1/2 cups per average size room. Since they are on everything including hard surfaces I would also spray with pyrethrins which are also natural and not poisonous.

Pyrethrins ARE in fact poisoness. I was poisoned by it. We had an exterminator come out to our house. I told him I was kind of sensitive to pesticides. He said "oh we have something organic, it will be perfect for you".

Pyrethrums in it's natural state comes from flowers a type of daisy and crysamthums. You can actuall smell it. Smells like pesticides. It kills the bugs that might want to eat the plant. The plant natural defense.
But when you buy it, it is a synthetic. It is also extremely concentrated.
It is a neurotoxin

Pyrethrins are in fact dangerous! Just because they are a plant derivative does not mean they're safe! It is no different than DDT as a hazard level to humans and pets.

i'm not sure how you're suggesting to use the Borax - spreading -powder around the room / carpet / furniture or dilute in water and spray - could you please give directions on how to use the borax - Thanks

Same problem! My hubby is the only one getting bitten/bothered. These are the things we've tried and they seemed to work for awhile, but when it got hot, and rainy, they hatch almost everyday. They are called Midges, noseeums, etc.

1. Put ammonia, 1 cup full strength down all drains, followed by 1 cup hot water. Leave. Repeat a few times each week.

2. Put 1 cup white vinegar in washing, on hot, dry on hot, put clothes in plastic bag, seal and tie until use. Even better, we've got a freezer and put them in there, including shoes for 24 hours, or until needed.

3. The thing that helped the most was taking Vitamin B Complex, and Brewers Yeast Suppliment.

The whole house needs to be treated, everyone has to pitch in. The bugs had completely left him alone until a couple of weeks ago when we had several days of rain, added with heat and they thrive.

You can also spray a 50/50 of white vinegar/water on everything, or 50/50 alcohol/water works, too.

Check inside and under all furniture, drawers, cupboards, etc.

And remove all nests and spray.

There is so much to this, I know. These buggers are next to impossible to completely eradicate because they hatch, molt and hatch again, several times. Each stage is a little bigger and peskier than the last.

I feel for anyone who had to go through this. It has nothing to do with not being clean or hygienic, and it's so hard when others, especially family and friends think you're crazy. Sometimes you think maybe you are. But I'm here to tell all of you... You are NOT crazy!

I've been going through this nightmare since July 2010. Lost my dream home because of this. Had to give it back to the bank after 5 years and paying $100,000.00 in mortgage payments and also losing $50,000 in furnishings.

I spent $10,000 out of packet to safe my house. 4 different exterminating companies. Also buying the best insecticide in the market nothing worked.

About 2 weeks ago I sat on a couch i SAT there for about 2 minutes next thing you know I've been bitten in six different places and I was looking at the bites and I could tell they weren't bed bugs bites. All i could see were these little white things. They look like dry skin. And what I've noticed is when I pull them out of my skin if you don't watch out where it falls or where you put it they're real scratchy, grabby, sticky you name it. So if you do happen to pull one of these things out what you want to do is put it on a wet piece of tissue, paper towel or wet towel. Cuz if you don't when you pull it out of your skin it's going to stick to your fingers and then you go to scratch your face and then its going to stick onto your face.

And this really sucks for me because I am already a freak about having dead skin on my body. I don't know how to tell you to eliminate them from your house hold but I dunno what works for me and what can get you some relief on getting them at least off of your body. Have you ever seen them wash clothes where one side is washcloth like regular wash cloth and the other side is scratchy the washcloth is a vanilla color. That scratchy side will get them suckers off of your body. And you want to do this in the shower of course lol

I had the same problem, with invisible biting bugs while I sleep. No bed bugs, no pets for fleas, but I think the culprit was in dust. Now the problem is back. The last time the problem ended completely was after I had the house tented for termites. No more bites at all for years, until now. So sorry you have been through hell with your situation.

Thank you for your story. I've been dealing with this for almost three yrs. First time it happened I could see them every where and then I finally put the bits to them. There at once I thought I was pulling some type of work thing under the skin of the bits and other things. I didn't know what to do but I was over it. Everyone I mean everyone thought I was on drugs and crazy. I couldn't understand I was the only one. I had my husband take me to o the hospital and I brought tape samples and tried to tell them my story but they weren't having it and locked me up in the nut house. That's when my life turned. Every emotion going on and still this darn bug on me following me and just bring without my new baby at time and hubby was the worst.. after days there just broken and depressed I just shut everyone and the ones I loved out.. couldn't talk to anyone. I lost my job, family , friends and lost myself and locked myself in the house and didn't move for like 6months or longer. Losted so much weight I thought I was gonna die. So I denied to others I didn't see them anymore and the bites for just pimples or something scratches whenever meanwhile it's still going on in my head. Nobody would ever believe me and I'll be damned if I went to another doctor or hospital so they can just lock me up again. I thought a doctor was supposed to help with your concerns and run tests. If I wanted to know if somebody was nuts or crazy I would have done that first but you know what didn't even see me can do anything other there for five minutes and I was just talking to them and didn't even look at my evidence he just laughed at me and then a policeman came over to escort me to The nut House. I don't know if it's discrimination I really don't know because yes I had a history but that was also 15 years ago. And people change. So no I wasn't high I'm not on drugs I have these bites everywhere I just threw out and they itch they burn hot water hurts on nothing's killing them I don't know what they are but I pulling out of my skin sometimes I can't even explain what they look like but they move and I really tiny. Now my daughter has them and my husband has them The Knowing doesn't believe me still not even them. I don't know now it's 3 years and now it's happening real big again . And now I'm going back into shutting the world out and being depressed again. I don't know what to do I hate the hospital I want to get them in so much trouble I don't know what to do I don't know how to do it I'm not a mean person but come to find out I'm not the only person that's happened to. I just want to make sure this never happens to another person can a person gets the help that they need for that situation going on besides locking them up and do a nut house and telling them that they're crazy and that they need help. Is the reason why we have doctors to get answers to get help but I guess they don't know the answer some things so I suggest they go back to school or go to bug class.so now that my and my whole family is infested with these things and I cannot get rid of them and I've been living with these creatures for 3 years and thanks to the hospital for not even checking into it now it's worse what can I do who can I call about that to complain do you know.and also did it make your skin like chappie like pain sometimes painful red swelling feels like chapped like I don't even know like rough bumpy.?I mean I've read a lot and some people when this first happened said it might be might sort might be scabies or bed bugs like it's none of those I don't know what mites look like is there a really good picture of it online I love it on a person. I just don't understand if it's something so common it happens a lot why there isn't something to fix it make it go away or people having knowledge of it. I just want to make it go away have a normal life and be able to go back to work and be a great mother and a great wife and be that outgoing caring happy funny amazing person that everybody loves being around when they saw me I just brighten your day up. This is been going on way too long .. help. Lol.

Wow, I thought I was the only one. I have been suffering for over a year!! I had a bag of laundry that I forgot abt and left closed, when I opened the bag. About 1,000 of these white really off white bugs came flying out at me. It was horrible, I took a two hour shower then went to an er. They have also been in my hair , yes all hair. I was told at er that I had Scabies so I treated myself for that. No luck, they got into my car, all over the house, and imbed into furniture etc if they can. So all over my body is large bites that look like flower and white stuff all under my skin. It itches but not real bad, and everywhere I go I see people itch. So have not seen my family all this time, I dont want anyone to go thru this. I have tried everything and all the white stuff I sit for hours using several things to get all this white junk out and heal. I went to 3 deems, er twice and drs. And yes I can see them. They appear as white dots stuff, but without my glasses I can see the whole body of oval or round translucent bugs to me. So yes everyone things Im crazy that it is all white lint. And when it is hot in the car they go crazy. No matter how many time I clean and vacuum. This is a nightmare help!!!

I was wondering if you noticed any other bugs that seemed to appear .I started this disaster about a year ago and still hav"nt gotten rid of them. I will get a break every now and then but they come back like crazy. I use the vinegar and it kills them only if it is directly on them it seems that way. they have cost me my 2 cats and many "friends" my home, (i moved in with my mom) only to track them to her house) and now i when I do go out i smell like vinegar. the vet scamed me out of 230 dollars, a cleaning service got me for 250. read their fine print! pest control tried selling 6000. in new gutters, yes you read it right! and after countless hours research on internet, It seems nobody knows for sure what they are. why is"nt this heard of more? why only a few people like us get the displeasre of these things? not to sound mean but i am glad i found you people, cause i was ready to call life quits. i would enjoy somebody to talk to. eaten alive in nebr

I've been putting up with this tiny grain of salt bug for two years. If I put my feet just above the carpet it's like they jump and bite my feet. I got rid of my futon as same thing. I sleep on the couch and bought a new one and have to make sure there's none on it before I go to sleep. My friend would sit on the floor or sleep over on the carpet in a sleeping bag. With no bites. They spray once a month around the corners doesn't seem to work. I also find these on my cell and coffee table and wood dining table. Have to clean everything everyday. What in the world do I DO?? WILL STEAM CLEANING HELP??

I finally feel Im not alone. I ripped up my carpet and then dust mites appeared. Only knew what they were because the Orkin exterminator told me. But explained because the floor is old he couldnt determine how deep the floor is or layers of dust mites there may be. He did a spray but said I would need to have them come a couple more times. But I have to wait 3 months till they can come back. Im a clean freak that hates and scared of bugs. It got worse and more came through the floor. After fogging my room 3 times I put a new floor down. But I noticed these things that looked like plaster where there is no reason for plaster. I goggled and found they are plaster eggs and when they hatch are little white bugs that look like grains of salt. Basically its getting worse and cant get rid of them. They are in my eyes, mouth, nose, ears and in my feet that they made my feet and ankles swollen. Then on each side of my tongue they were embedded. I have an electric toothbrush and scrubbed like hell and couldnt get them off. That when I would talk I would drool sometimes. Under my nose and left cheek is going numb. I clean every day with a vacuum in each hand to the point that now I can only do a little before my back goes. I even painted 3 layers of seal on the new floor because they were in the cracks. This is just a bedroom. Please can anyone help me get rid of them. I cover myself head to toe even tape plastic bags around my feet while cleaning and they get through it. Please help. I cant take it anymore!

I'm at 6 months in this crap and it's living hell. I'm a clean freak so this does not help my anxiety.
I am highly allergic so it makes it 100× worse.
DO NOT PICK AT THEM BECAUSE IT WILL MAKE INFESTATION UNMANAGEABLE. Get plastic couch cover protectors, all mattress protecters pillows, for bedbugs and mites online and ducttape those things up where nothing can go in or out. Put everything in plastic zip lock storage bags. All food in storage containers or fridge or freezer. Put things in trash bags to store if your not using them and I have plastic totes from Walmart to keep my clothes in. Wear gloves. And um dealing with two dogs as well and your pets and you can give it back and forth so treat them as well. So much more so feel ask questions. Hope this helps

I probably never would have thought anything about the itchy spots or crawly sensations I was having if not for one night lying in bed looking at my phone and I saw a tiny, tiny white bug on the screen. It was a little hard to squash I almost thought it a flea but it had more of a hard carapace. A bedbug nymph first came to mind. I have so many other health problems that I take medications for allergies being one of them. So sometimes I get hives. Plus I'm peeling from a slight sunburn from a few weeks ago which is causing some itching as well.

But the appearance of this little white bug has been "bugging" me. Every time I get another bite, itchy spot or creeping sensation I'm searching for the culprit. I've searched my bed for signs of bed bugs. Some in my apartment complex has had issues with them a few months back so I am paranoid about keeping an eye out for them. And I have long hair and anyone whose ever had to put permethrin in their hair and use a nit comb knows it can be a right pain in the arse. So if my head gets crawly I'm so definitely checking my hair.

After doing a bit of research and reading the horror stories posted here I don't think all of these are the same little bastard of a bug. But I think I have found my culprit. And it may help a few people out there as well. Bird mites. Or even rodent lice. But mine is probably bird mites.

This spring I discovered the vent covering or my exhaust fan vent leading from my bathroom to the outside is broken. Making it a very lovely place for a bird's nest. Every morning I could go into the bathroom and hear birds in my belfry, so to speak. But now the research I'm reading is saying once the fledgling birds leave the nest the mites will go in search of other warm blooded hosts to feed on. Even enter through the ears and nose and mouth causing internal symptoms if left untreated long enough.

But even if you have black or red or white bugs it can be different species of bird mites. So get your homes looked over. Read this article and then look for a specialist in your area. I sure hope this helps someone out there that may feel that's they are at the end of their rope. There's someone who believes you. You're not crazy. And you're not alone. Blessed be.

Thank you very much for your answer. I suffered with dan bird mites for about 2 years. I then abandoned my apt because they were so bad they were falling from the ceiling onto my head and crawling and biting. It never occurred to me what they were. The exterminator said they were ants. But I've Googled all ways to find out what they were. They didn't look like ants. They were tiny black specks and tiny white specks and the bites were ferocious. My head and back were covered with bites. It took 2 months to heal from them. And I was extremely psychologically affected. Totally traumatized. Thank you again for tellinge what they were. BTW a woman hoarder with birds had moved in upstairs from me shortly before this all happened.

I am so glad to know that some other people are experiencing this terrible tiny white points look like grain of salt appears on things around the house, on my cloths, on my body. Its terriffying to feel the crawling and biting. I showed these white bugs. They dont look like bugs, but sure they bite, sting, they seems harmless . I called 3 different exterminators and none found anything in the house, I showed them the white stuff under my lab top ( which was on my kitchen table) , then I saw on the counter too.. I also found on the iPad screen . Mysterious white tiny spots on my cloths. Everybody said, Its thread, piece of cotton, its LINT. Drs treat me for scabies, lices. ( finish treatment, there is not too much improving) . The house was sprayed by ourselves for beg bugs, for lices with products such as Hot Shot . Whashing cloths, towels, sheets at 150 F, temperature, we vacuum, map the house often, we put the dirty cloths in a sealed plastic bag. We shower and change clothes daily. What else can we do?.
Please tell if MIDES, NOSEeUMs are contagious. Thank you so much.
Please share more any one who had and get read of this unfortunate ate and painful situations. Blessings and patience to all of us.

I went threw the bird mite horror a couple years ago my boyfriend got a car that had sat under a tree full of birds and one of the windows was down the whole time. I woke up feeling itchy and stuffy so when I turned on the lights and pulled back the sheets there they were bird mites. Although it took me a long time to figure out what they were and where they had came from. I had to throw almost everything I had away. Now after starting over, nearly three years later I am experiencing the same thing over. His son raises chickens and had brought a couple into his house to doctor them. He had been complaining of fleas. He visited us for a couple days and suddenly I'm going threw it all over again. What can I use to kill these creatures?? I can't afford to start over yet again, and in such short time. Please help!!!

Call a local pest control service and ask if they will come out and give you a free estimate on what it would take to get rid of them. At least they might tell you what they are. Good luck.

They r a joke!! All of them are a joke!
Showed up w no loop or scope. Could care less... n most dont DO mites...mould mites dont respond to pesticides either. Only moisture reduction n finding any hidden mold or moldy bathrooms n drain cleaning n gnats can be so tiny... u have no clue youre infested til it infested... I posted a long reply in here on how to go about a great chance of ridding yourself n ur animals of these Devils Spawn... n keep dry pet food up as much as possible. Garbage disposals must also be cleaned n ZEP green drain cleaner is terrific! N u can use lemon peels, n ice to clean once a week n run w a gloved hand I under the rim w bleach too... gnats n mould mites could be the issue... see my other remedy reply.... moisture is the KEY!!!! Shut it down!! N watch the transformation... no one will help on these types of issues n theyre so tiny getting samples is horrible. They squish under tape often. But samples is great if u can get them. Gnats n mould mites!! PrOblemOhh!!

Hi Judy, I'm having the same problem as you. It seems like dust is biting me but every now and then I can see a little white bug jump across the room but I can never spot it after. I was wondering if you figured out what it was or if you've found a way to kill them.

I've tried a few things but it seems like I'm just pissing them off. If you can give me any info I'd really appreciate it. Maybe also we can exchange emails so we can try to figure this out together. I'm dying here and I desperately need help. Also I've called a lot of pest control companies and they have no idea. One guy said maybe crane flies/grass flies but I have no idea.

I saw on line that to sprinkle salt on things, carpets, bedding etc. would be helpful. I left it a few days before vacuuming.
Sprinkle on matresses and things and quite quickly the problem seems to have gone - don't forget the car seats. Before reading about the salt I had been struggling for 3 to 4 months u- it has been AWFUL. Pest Controller was very nice man but couldn't help. I hope this will be useful to others and can't imagine the salt does any harm - I've even sprinkled it oveeer my sweaters, trousers etc and soaked tights, vests, knickers etc in a strong diluted solution of white
vinegar. The problem has Gone.

Yes I desperately need some suggestions I've gotten rid of my bed my couches my son and I are sleeping on air mattresses and keep our clothing in tubs I have thrown out countless clothes furniture I can't afford to keep doing this any suggestions? I keep finding the salt grains in the bed even though I bought a new bed left it wrapped in plastic got a mattress protector and I found a few little salt grains on that I don't know what to do I almost just want to move and say screw it

November 30, 20180 found this helpful

Yes, you will need to move, but you must move and leave everything behind. Put all your stuff in storage for 1 year. Then bath while you have windex on your body. I mean leave the windex on each part of your body for 15 minutes before washing it off. Then get out of the place with your son, and onto greener pastures. Things will work out. There are people with less.

I am having the same or a similar problem mainly in my Bedroom and Bathroom and it seems to be worse at night. I couldn't understand why I was the only one being bitten then I read it's possibly due to me having a weak immune system. Please if anyone finds out what they are let me know and I'll do the same. A few months ago, the beginning of June to be exact, I was experiencing the same thing. One night I felt several bites all over my legs, I had no idea what it was. The next few days I saw tiny white things flying towards my track lights, but they looked a lot like lint. I knew it could not be lint because they were flying. At first, I thought it was fleas because I do have a dog, but then I was told fleas do not jump. I tried everything you could possible think of, but nothing worked! I search for answers but no one knew what this parasite was nor how to get rid of it. A termite company came to my home but had no idea what this was. I started googling and I found several sites with some many people suffering from the same thing.

I am writing this, because I hope that I can help others that are suffering. I have tried many things from these blogs. Borax does help, it was one of the first things that help to calm things down, but it does not get rid of it. I have tried Kleen Green natural enzyme, and have spent a lot of money buying this product because I thought it killed them... it does not. It is only a temporary fix. I have tried vinegar, and windex, but again it was only temporary. The only thing that killed these bugs, was 91% alcohol. Yes, alcohol! However, 91% alcohol is very flammable and should be used with caution. I poured the alcohol in a empty windex bottle and sprayed everything!!. One night they were flying and I could literally see them under the track light, so I started spraying and I literally saw them drop. Although they are white while flying, once they are dead, the body is red but you can see their wings. You can find 91% alcohol at Target or CVS, but Target is much cheaper. Another you must change is your diet. For whatever reason, this bug attacks people who is currently under a lot of meds, or who has toxic build-up from sugar, alcohol, coffee etc. You must cut out sugar all together, and stop drinking alcohol or coffee (if not both) in order to help with your immune system. I hope this information will help someone, as I once had no where to turn but these forums. God Bless you all, and don't stop praying!

I have been dealing with these bugs for 6 months now. Ive tried everything to kill them. Isopropyl, Vinegar, Bleach, Borax, Ammonia & insecticides. I noticed on your comment about changing your diet. I think this explains why they are only attacking me and not my wife/daughter. I do consume a lot surgar since I only drink coffee and tea & sodas. Did you ever identify the big. As much info as Ive found about other people suffering it seems like no one knows what it is. I believe my dog is bringing them inside. I noticed she is also covered with them. Im in the process treating g her now. But with in three days there back on her. I think they are coming from outside in the yard. If you have any other advice to help me get through this I appreciate it. Ive been to 3 doctors 2 Dermatologist. They all think Im crazy.

I do not have the answer yet but I am having the same problem. Small white biting bugs that look like dust. I will try the Borax and 91% Alcohol and let you know if it helps. I am going out of my mind. I love to sleep but dread going to bed at night. They seem to ease up once daylight comes but they never stop completely. I was hoping that once the weather gets colder thing would change.

The only problem with Borax is that it is not good for your vacuum cleaner.

Thank all for your imput. I am a 79 yr old woman and have been fighting these "bugs" for several years. Do any of you have to pick the "lint" from your closes. It takes me several hours to get dressed because I refuse to put anything on until I have examined the items and "picked" everything off that is visible. I am a "neat freak" and would die if anyone knew or thought I had " bugs". The worst problem I have are towels. I have stopped using regular towels and have started using microfiber towels. They seem to do much better. I also add a few drops of tea tree oil to my shampoo and use aran oil on my face abd crevices. All this seems to help, but does not eliminate these creatures entirely.

Hi Everyone,

Hate to say it but My hubby and I have gone through the same thing. And we are still to this day.

The first night I got bitten we had just gotten brand new kathmandu sleeping bags right out of the packaging and woke up 2 days later with bites all over our faces, all over our backs all over our arms. EVERYWHERE!!!

The most DISGUSTING and ANNOYING thing was these bugs bit us all over our faces. That's the part that really got us. They crawled all over our faces and we didn't even feel it. It was like nothing we had ever seen. And it didn't help at all the way people looked at us when we had the bites all over our faces and arms so I can completely relate to all of you. And it SUCKS hearing about how much they are ruining people's lives.

Then One day I actually found them on me. We were in the car and I saw these little white things attached to my hand. They do look like specks of salt. these things were like head lice, they were white and tiny. One thing I realized is that they can bite in groups (Very close together) and they latch themselves on to your skin (Think of claws in latched). I had to peel and detach them off and it was disgusting. They latched on and there were 4 just attached sitting on the end of my finger. I couldn't believe it.

If I wasn't paranoid as hell I probably wouldn't have been so determined to catch these bast***s that were eating me alive.

We even went to the hospital EMERGENCY room and she said they were angry fleas. And the nurse just sent us on our way. Even though we told her we are getting eaten alive. And showed her our arms, back and face. Heaps of bites stuck together.

Washing everything is a good idea. One thing we found is if you dont wear gloves the f***ers attack your hands while you are putting your washing in the wash. We only really got bitten when we went to bed (Dreaded bed time) Wash all your bedding and wear gloves or plastic bags around your hands so they dont attack you in the process. We learnt that The hard way. One thing we have been consistent with is bedding (MY PARANOIA). Even though you have cleaned everything on your bed. The moment you feel like you are getting bitten in bed (Even a slight feeling that your getting bitten) You are most probably right. We get straight up pull the sheets of bag them straight away so nothing in the sheets will get out. (for washing day) put that bag in a cupboard have quick showers and change bedding. (It might sound like a hassle but it has worked for us) The first night we had a proper sleep in aaaaaaaaages! Eating better is definitely a good one, we weren't eating good at all and now that we have been I think it has helped. Though the last week my partner fell off and got bitten again (He is on some medication too so the posts here have really helped me put two and two together) The immune system part made sense. I haven't been bitten at all. Im eating good, he's off and on and got bitten yesterday. Same kind of

bites but not as extensive as they use to be. I would also give the car a good clean out. I think everyone who has cleaned their houses forget to do the car. Your pets also go in to your car so you could be bringing them back in to the house again. I really hope this helps someone and I wish you's all the best. Snow

These could be scabie mites. They will bite and burrow when your sleeping. If your scratching body areas use permetherin creme at once, neck to toe, then put all linen in hot dryer. If they've advanced to burrowing in skin (red very itchy areas) you'll have to additionally consider Ivermectin via a physician prescription Good luck.

Vacuum a lot. Use an allergeric good mattress cover that zips. I have same issue. These are mites that bite. They sting like a bee for something so small is amazing. Went through what you are. It will never totally go away but will get better. You will learn what works for you. Look up mite bites. That is what I did. You described what I had. Still do sometimes. Let me know if I can help more.

I see that it's years ago when this was posted. Want to comment anyways. I found this blog by typing in tiny white bugs and I was expecting to find lice as the underlying problem but I'm reading people's comments and some people are putting that they can see them ,some people are saying they can't see them. The ones you cannot see are called scabies and the ones you can see could be dust mite or lice
