Identifying a Houseplant?

Identifying a Houseplant - climbing plantIs it a pothos or philodendron? It has waxy leaves that are rigid and pretty long. I have it wrapping around the banister of my stairs. It was given to me by someone who has had it for 22 years.

I always mix them up to: check this site out:

My vote is pothos, as it does not look like your leaves are heart shaped. The second link has better pictures!

I think it is a pothos. The stems connect differently than the heart-shaped philodendron, a little less delicate. They both like the same conditions; bright indirect sun and not too much water.

What is surprising about your plant being a pothos is its age. The lifespan of a pothos is an average of 10 years, maybe the person who gave the plant to you had it for 20 years because it has been started again many times from cuttings. How much rigid and waxed are its leaves ? It you can't fold the leaves without breaking them, then it is not a pothos nor a philodendrom. Check that the leaves are alternate on the stem, not opposite.

The leaves of the pothos and the philodendrom are alternate. If it is a pothos it needs more light because larger parts of its leaves should be yellow or white. If you find that the leaves are opposite, take a look at a plant called "pointed leaf hoya". It is a climber with rigid thick waxy leaves and it can live for ages.
