Identifying a Houseplant?

Identifying a Houseplant - plant with fuzzy pink stems and striped leavesI got this plant at the grocery store and it wasn't labelled. Lately it hasn't been doing so well. It has pink fuzzy stems with striped leaves. Anyone know what it is? Thanks so much.

It could be the Coleus Plant. Make sure you prune for a more healthy plant.

I originally thought this might be in the Begonia family also but the more I researched the more confused I became as I could not find any kind of Begonia that looked like this - so I asked for help. Part of the problem seems to be that the photo may not be the correct/exact color (may be darker/pinker/redder than actual plant?).

  • It seems it is in the Pilea family and may possibly be a variety called 'Norfolk'.
  • These plants need similar conditions to Begonia, slightly humid air, with light compost type soil, and adequate moisture but good drainage.
  • Pilea are known as 'Friendship Plant' because they're so easy to propagate that friends can share pieces of them, and root cuttings in a jar of water.
  • They also have the interesting name of Silver Tree, because of the metallic appearance of the foliage.
  • Here are a couple of links with photos. Keep in mind the Pilea family has many varieties (like the Begonia) so don't get confused by entirely different looking types.

Here is a link describing Pilea care in more detail.
