Information About Antique Trunk?

An antique trunk.I found this old trunk and was wondering if you could help me finding the maker, date, etc. Also, I'm planning on refreshing it a bit but I notice the textile in the trunk has mold. Do you think I can salvage it? Thank you!

You have an American Antique Dome Top Trunk. If an antique trunk does not have a manufacturer's mark, then it will be almost impossible to determine who made it. Your trunk is approximately 110-120 years old.

Since it is damaged by mold, try to kill the mold first. Place your trunk in the sun for a day or two. Move it around so that all sides get exposure.

Then clean the trunk with patience.
Usually, when restoring antique trunks, people remove heavily damaged tissue and paper.
To remove the cloth, you can use a knife or scissors. Cut the fabric as close as possible to the seams, cutting around the metal. When you have removed most of the fabric, use the scraper to hide any rest under the seams, and the knife to cut the remains. For the corners better a screwdriver or a chisel that works just as well.
To remove paper from inside an antique trunk mix 3 parts vinegar and 1 part water in spray bottle, then good scraper spray down inside of trunk, do not soak wear gloves let sit for 15 min 100 grit sandpaper if lining trunk.
Also, during the restoration, people disassemble the chest of the trunk a little, then they sand the wood, recover the original state of the metal using a wire brush with the drill to polish the oxide layer.

The average American made antique trunk is worth about $100 to $300 depending on the style, size and condition. If fully restored prices can be anywhere from $400 to $1300.

I know you can clean mold with a diluted bleach solution. Do this first and then take to a dealer for a verbal appraisal.

The paper upholstery inside the chest is very moldy. I would suggest removing paper and textile. Then clean stubborn mold from the inside of an old steamer trunk with diluted bleach.

Mix a half cup of bleach in a bucket of warm water. Dip a sponge into the solution and wring it out. Wipe out the steamer trunk paying special attention to the mold spots.
