Kenmore Machine Won't Sew?

My Kenmore 158.17031 sewing machine runs like it is filling a bobbin. The needle won't go up and down, but the motor runs and belts move and the bobbin winder moves. What do I need to do to get the machine to engage and run?

You need to look at the wheel at the right of your machine. It has an inner and outer wheel. Turn the inner and outer wheels in the opposite direction and that will get it into sewing mode.

I believe Judy is correct with her suggestion but if you cannot get it corrected you can always call or visit a Sears Service Center as their technicians will many times repair a minor problem with no charge or answer question about how to 'fix' a problem

They can also direct you to a free manual (if you do not have one available).

Google Sears Service Center with your zip code to see if there is one near you.

This may be a copy of a manual for your machine.
