Purpose of Breed: Guarding flocks

Average Size: Ranges from 22-26 inches tall and weighs between 80-110 pounds.
Color(s): White or Ivory
Coat Type: A double coat of medium coarse hair. The undercoat is soft and the outer coat is longer and straight or wavy.
Grooming: This breed that requires regular grooming and occasional bathing to keep the coat in good condition. Standard care for eyes, pads and nails. Ears should be cleaned and examined regularly.
Exercise Needs: This is a large breed is best suited to the country. Like other large breeds, the Kuvasz needs plenty of regular exercise each day to maintain his mental and physical health.
Temperament: This breed is intelligent, courageous and suspicious of strangers. The Kuvasz has a docile nature unless he perceives his flock is in danger. Bred to be independent, this breed can seem aloof and unaffectionate. The Kuvasz is easily trained and makes a playful pet and excellent guard dog. Obedience training and socialization are essential for this assertive breed. Although the Kuvasz is gentle with his "own" children, he may perceive all other humans and animals as potential threats and so should not be left unsupervised.
Common Ailments: Prone to developmental bone problems and hip dysplasia.
Life Expectancy: Averages 10-12 years.
Trivia: The breed's name comes from a misspelling of the Turkish word kawaz, that means 'guard' or 'protector.'
