Why do you want curtains? If for the look, you can use anything. If for privacy, choose something that can't be seen through, if for warmth, something thick, if for darkening, use a sunblock material. Basically as long as the fabric will do what you need it to do, you can use anything.
You may use any material you wish. However, if you are using lightweight or medium weight fabric it is advised to put interfacing on the top where the grommets are to stiffen the material and make the material between the grommets hang properly.
