These adorable toys are perfect travel and bedtime companions for small children. Great way to use your fleece and other fabric scraps. I also use small scraps as part of the stuffing by mixing it in with the fiber fill. If you going to donate them to a charity, like I do, do not use buttons for the eyes! Instead embroider a french knot. Have fun mixing and matching fabrics!

Total Time: 1 hour (apx)

Yield: 1 puppy pillow

Supplies:

  • 1/4 yd scraps of fleece or other fabrics
  • 6 oz fiber fill for stuffing
  • 10 in embroidery floss to make eyes
  • sewing machine
  • needle and thread

Steps:

  1. Cut two squares of fleece for body of puppy pillow. The ones in the photo are 9 x 9". I've also made mini 5 x 5" versions. Cut two sets "C" shaped ears out of scraps. It's fun to use a different fabric on the front and back of each ear. Cut one eye patch and one nose piece. For arms and legs cut long rectangles that are rounded at one end (apx 2 x 5"), again use scraps to create a patchworked, colorful look. You'll need a total of 8 of these pieces to make the two arms and two legs.

  3. Next, make the arms and legs: Sew right sides together leaving the short, squared end open to turn right side out. Add some fiber fill to each arm and leg if desired. Then sew the ear pieces right sides together along the curved edge. Turn right side out and add a little stuffing to each ear.
  4. Now create the face on one of the body pieces. Position eye patch and nose. Sew with straight or zigzag stitch. Sew mouth by hand or on machine. Use double strand of embroidery floss to make eyes. I use a french knot wrapped three times around needle to make a large pupil.
  5. Pin ears, arms and legs to body piece with face, right sides together. Stitch around entire square with a basting stitch. Next pin back body piece right sides together and stitch around body, leaving an opening of about 2" at bottom to turn right side out. Be careful that ears, arms, and legs are laying flat and don't get caught when stitching around outside.

  7. Turn right side out and just stuff with fiber fill (I often mix some of my small scraps in with filling). Hand stitch to close opening. Now you have a little puppy pillow! You can also make other animals, such as a cat with a few small changes (see photo).
