Children's Soft Puzzle - assembled felt puzzleThis is a cute homemade kiddie puzzle made of felt. I kept this one at 4 pieces for my toddler nephew. You can cut them into more pieces to make them more difficult. I did a freehand design here, but you can cut out templates to trace if you please. Having a rotary cutter really helps, but you can use scissors in their place, as well.

Total Time: 1 hour

Yield: 1 puzzle

  • scissors
  • hot glue gun with glue

Steps:

  1. Place fabrics on a cutting work surface. Use your straight edge to measure a square the colour of your design's background. Mine is 4.5" x 4.5". Cut it out with your rotary wheel held against the straight edge.
  2. Children's Soft Puzzle - use rotary cutter to cut out the background piece of felt

  3. Now place the background square on top of another colour to make a border tile. Cut a square around it just a bit larger than the background.
  4. Children's Soft Puzzle - place background piece on top of another piece to cut a border slightly larger

  5. Draw a design (or use a template cut-out) onto another coloured piece of felt.
  6. Children's Soft Puzzle - draw a design or use a template on a third piece of felt, this one is a fish

  7. Cut out the design.
  8. Children's Soft Puzzle - cut out the design

  9. Flip it over and place it on the square so you can't see any pencil markings.
  10. Children's Soft Puzzle - turn over to eliminate pencil marks and place on top piece of felt

  11. Cut out any additional details. I gave the fish bubbles.
  12. Children's Soft Puzzle - add more designs - in this case bubbles

  13. Add hot glue to the design pieces and glue down onto the background square.

  15. Gently lift each corner of the background square and add hot glue. Press down to seal. This keeps the background exactly where you want it without shifting.
  16. Children's Soft Puzzle - glue background square to frame square using hot glue

  17. Use your straight edge to find the middle of the puzzle horizontally.
  18. Children's Soft Puzzle - use straightedge to find the middle of the puzzle

  19. Cut in half vertically.
  20. Children's Soft Puzzle - cut in half vertically

  21. Find the middle vertically and cut in half the other way.
  22. Children's Soft Puzzle - find the middle of the side and cut in half again, 4 pieces
