Making a Marionette Doll

May 14, 2009

marionetteMy granddaughter and I made this big marionette doll (24 inch) when the weather was too bad to go outside. We put paper-mache (newspaper strips and flour and water) over a balloon for the head. Let it dry and painted.

Glue on frayed sisal rope for hair. I made the body out of scrap fabrics, piece of wood for feet and hands. Tied it all together with cotton string. Since the doll has my granddaughter's hair color, she says this puppet is "her".

How do you attach the head, which will be have a hard neck, to the fabric of the body? Did you stuff the body very much? Is the body like a stick person? Did you carve the hands? It really is a cute thing to make. Congrats to you!

The head also has a neck a shoulders made of papier mache. The body is NOT stuffed at all. Simply made pants and shirt and sewed them together. The hands are papier mache, also, dried, then painted. The hands and feet and neck are glued to the cloth body with a glue gun.

Fun to make.
