Mix all ingredients well, except for the tomatoes, in a bowl.
Add tomatoes and gently stir to coat. Chill for 2 hours. Gently stir again before serving.

Place layer of tomatoes in 8x10 inch shallow serving bowl. Top with layer of onions. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, basil, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon vinegar and 1 teaspoon olive oil.
Peel and slice tomatoes in half, early in the morning. Pour some Italian dressing over tomato halves in a pyrex dish . Refrigerate. About 1 hour before serving, slice artichoke hearts and place on tomato halves.
