Mother Cat Aggressive Towards Kittens?

We adopted a stray cat when she was pregnant. She gave birth to three kittens. One of them unfortunately died. The kitten was really undersized. The mother has been good to the kittens so far. But now suddenly she seems very aggressive. She'll pounce on them and scratch and bite them really hard. I try to stop her and she'll growl/hiss at me. I don't know what to do. The babies are four weeks old. How long till the babies can start living without the mum? And can she kill the babies? How to prevent that if it comes to that?

Talk to your vet ASAP and have mom and the kits checked. She may have a health issue going on and best to rule that out first.

If you can't take them, at least call the vet and ask for ideas as they can tell you--if they know mom's history--if there is something that is concerning. Sorry that one didn't make it. That is always so sad.

Will send up some prayers for all. Good luck!!

I've seen this happen a few times with Stray Cats. When a person adopts a cat and gives it a home after it's been on the streets for so long the cat can become mean if he feels threatened. The mother understands these are her babies. The only problem is she feels if they grow up they will be taking food away from her. She's trying to hurt them and put them in their place so they understand that she is the boss. Another problem is she's worried that the babies will end up being hungry and having to fight on the streets.

Basically, the only thing you can do right now is take the babies away from the mother. The babies are old enough now that they can eat on their own. It might be up to you to give them mailed to the babies 4 to 5 times a day to feed them. You will need to make Mother's Milk which is easy to do from a few items in your grocery store. You will need one yogurt natural no flavors or sugars added, a can of condensed milk with no sugar, some mayonnaise, and warm water.

Add two egg whites to a mixing bowl, one tablespoon of mayonnaise, the condensed milk, and the yogurt. Boil 1 and 3/4 cups of hot water and mix this together. This is the formula to make milk for babies if the mother can no longer feed them or has stopped feeding them. You can store this in your refrigerator up to 1 week. With two small kittens, the milk should last you 2 days maybe 3 days. To feed the babies you will pour some of the milk in a small bowl and heat it in the microwave for 15 to 30 seconds. You don't want to make the milk too hot for the babies to drink it should be the same temperature as a bottle of milk you'd feed a baby.

Try keeping the mother away from the babies and isolating the babies in a small cage or another area where the mother can't get to them. If you feel there is something wrong with the mother I would also consult your vet to find out if there's anything you can do.
