My Cat Loves Plastic Bags?

Bronze Feedback Medal for All Time! 140 Feedbacks

Does anyone know why plastic grocery bags, garbage bags, any kind of plastic is appealing to my two cats? I asked the vet and she didn't have an answer for this strange behavior. Our cat, Lumpy, will shred any plastic bag she comes across. I use them to sort recyclables, carry things from room to room, etc. But if she comes across them, she will shred them to pieces. I am not sure if she actually eats them or not. So far the litterbox doesn't show evidence of that happening.

We scold her, take the bags away from her, etc., but she will follow you to where the bag is placed and continue to rip it apart. She isn't bored since she has an array of toys she plays with. Her diet seems to be OK. So we are puzzled about the bag ripping. The other cat will eat plastic, like the kind that seals bottle lids, etc. She will chew on it until she swallows it unless we can get to her first.

The cat is possibly attracted to the playful noise of the plastic bags. But it will be anything but "playful" if you allow them access to any plastic material especially to the point of eating any thing plastic.

Talk to your Veterinarian about the painful/expensive operation to remove foreign material from their intestines. Give them a safe toy to play with and remove all plastic from their reach. It's not that hard to do.

Your cat looks just like one in our family named Max. He loves to attack paper towels and toilet paper. So when he comes to visit, I have to put these two items out of his reach. I think he just enjoys doing it. It's like playfully tussling with another cat, I suppose.

Be very careful about plastic bags with cats, as we had a cat who apparently ate a plastic bag (unknown to us until the veterinarian did an x-ray and found it in her stomach). We had it taken out, but the damage to her stomach apparently was done and she died a few weeks later. Anne in NC

We realize the damage the bags could do to her system. She has so many toys to play with, that the bags shouldn't come into play. I had heard once that the bags are made with animal by-products and wondered if that was true and maybe she thought it was a treat? Puzzles us, but we keep trying to keep them away from her.

We once had a cat who would go in the bathroom and eat toilet paper after she had unrolled it....and not because of lack of food, she had enough provided for her. Our other cat will shred newspaper or magazines if she doesn't get treats when she demands them....crazy animals, lol. But we love them.
