Oil-like Stains on Freshly Washed Clothes?

Oil-like Stains on Freshly Washed Clothes? My husband got a used washer and dryer on Facebook two years ago. All of the sudden oil-like stains started appearing on a ton of our clothes. I'd clean out the machine, switch up detergents, I don't user fabric softener and still got stains. Recently, we decided it was probably the washer so we got a new machine. I thought we were in the clear when all of the sudden I washed a brand new pair of kids leggings and, alas, a small oil stain!

I've never dealt with these prior to two years ago. Please anyone who has any insight. HELP!

It sounds like there is something in the pipes or the water supply. Get a plumber's advice.

Some detergents contain dimethyl polysiloxane. It is a type of dissolved silicone oil which can cause oily spots on clothes before it has completely into the water. Check your detergent to see if it contains dimethyl polysiloxane, I think you have changed your washing machine but continue to use the same detergent in the same way.

Use a laundry detergent that doesn't have dimethyl polysiloxane, or dissolve it in water first, before adding it to the machine.

I had a used dryer that seemed to leave marks on my clothing. Maybe it is the source, instead of the washer.

Good luck, I hope you can figure it out. It's so frustrating to have clean clothing come out with stains.

This does sound very frustrating. Do you use dryer sheets? If so, maybe those are the culprits causing the stains.

Since you did not state if you check the clothes for stains before placing in the dryer so do we rule out the problem could be with the dryer?

Most likely it is with the washer but do you have a top loader or an HE machine?
It could be mineral deposits from hard water.
Do you know whether you have very hard water - perhaps using a hard water test strip would answer this question.
If you have hard water, this could be part of the problem.

If a washing machine is overloaded or detergent is not properly loaded, it won't properly dissolve in water - meaning it ends up on your clothes instead.

If you have an HE, front loader washer, this could be your problem:
"Detergents for high efficiency washing machines contain a silicone oil called dimethyl polysiloxane that is used to make the detergent less sudsy.
The spots occur when the detergent comes in direct contact with cotton clothes before it has completely dissolved in the wash water in the washing machine. Cotton seems to soak up this silicone oil..."

Use less detergent and make sure it is used correctly - try finding an HE detergent that does not have this ingredient; I'm not sure if they make one.
