Paper Hyacinths

My mother adores flowers that stand tall like hyacinths and lavender, so I'm making her a bouquet of them out of coloured paper. That's really all you need: paper, scissors, and glue. These flowers include the stem, so you can create several and they make a great bouquet as a gift.

You don't need a quilling tool or toothpick to twirl the paper, but it does make it faster than just using your fingers. I've added a link to my DIY paper quilling tool below. I used it in this craft.

Total Time: 1 hour

Yield: 2 hyacinths

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. Cut your coloured paper into a strip around 2.5" x 8" in size.
  2. Make a small fold along one of the vertical edges.
  3. Cut small and thin strips into the paper, stopping at the fold.
  4. Use a quilling tool, a toothpick, or your fingers to roll the strips into little curls.
  5. Go all the way until all strips are curled.
  6. Repeat the process with another colour of paper. You can twirl multiple strips at once to save time.
  7. To make stems, cut out strips of green paper about 2.5" x 10" in size.
  8. Begin rolling the paper diagonally from one end.
  9. Add glue as you go along.
  10. Glue the end in place and hold it shut for about 30 seconds.
  11. Apply glue along the entire folded base of the curled paper.
  12. Attach the end of the curled paper to the top of the stem, then bring it down diagonally down, wrapping around tightly.
  13. Add an extra blob of glue at the end and hold it in place on the stem for about 30 seconds.
  14. To make leaves, cut 3" x 3" squares out of the green paper.
  15. Fold the paper in an accordion fashion.
  16. Cut one side of the accordion into a pointed shape like a leaf.
  17. Unfold it and make slightly deeper cuts into the folds.
  18. Add glue to the base of the leaves.
  19. Wrap them onto the stem diagonally downwards, then fold them back slightly.
  20. Enjoy your beautiful flowers.
