Preventing and Treating Cataracts

January 25, 2008

Physician Treating CataractsThis tip is of vital importance for anyone on tamoxifen, which is prescribed for a breast cancer patient. As well as having an annual mammogram, make sure you have an annual eye exam.

I went for my annual eye exam and was diagnosed as having cataracts and was sent to an ophthalmologist to verify whether surgery was needed yet. The ophthalmologist told me that my cataracts were not ready for surgery however he did find what he thought was either a cyst or a hole in my retina. I then was referred to a retinal specialist who diagnosed me as having a definite cyst on my retina. I was told that it could possibly correct itself or if it progressed, I would end up with a hole in my retina. This was determined by an eye scan. I was told to return in 6 month as a follow up.

The following morning, I received a phone call from the retinal specialist telling me that she did some research on my condition and found that tamoxifen could cause cataracts as well as the retinal cyst. The cataract part did not bother me as surgery can remedy that. Her main concern was that my other eye could end up with a cyst and then I would have big problems with my vision and possibly surgery with no guarantee.

She suggested that my oncologist be contacted which I did and she said that seeing that I had been on the tamoxifen for 3 1/2 years that I had greatly benefited from it and to discontinue it.

I wear glasses and I normally go for an annual exam. But for those that do not wear glasses and take tamoxifen, do yourself a favor and make sure you keep a close watch on your eyes. My doctor told me that there are thousands upon thousands of patients that take tamoxifen yet only 3 patients have been documented as having retinal cysts that have been attributed to being caused by the tamoxifen. If this tip has helped but one person my purpose of sending in this tip has been fulfilled.

Anyone tried eye drops and/or nutritional supplements which improve the vision (cartaract/blurred vision)? How about Catalin eyedrop? How about Sharp Vision (by Irwin Nat'l)?

Many thanks!

I have been taking Bilberry tablets for over a year now, don't think they improve my vision but my eyes are not so sore and watery like they use to be. Just take 1 a day.

I like Similisan eye drops. They have drops for dry eyes, cataracts and pink eye. I know, for a fact, that the "pink eye" drops work! The "dry eye" drops are good, too.

I'm using the "cataract" drops right now, but don't really know if they're helping any. You can find them at most drug stores, or K-Mart, Walmart, etc.

Have you been to the eye dr? He should tell you for sure what to do, have you had the cataracts removed? Best thing that ever happened to me, I can see great without my glasses also. Please see you eye dr, the eyes are nothing to fool with. rose

Ocuvite and Eyevite are two good brands of vitamins for the eyes. However, the people who I knew used them had poor vision from macular degeneration.

Eat carrots. Its true vitamin A is good for your eyes. (smile) Also, try any dark yellow fruit or veggie. I like apricots. Yum

Its best to check with your doctor.
Best wishes for good luck.

Use the Thriftyfun search feature. Type in non-surgical cataract removal. Click on first item, Nu Eyes Review, for discussion. I would love to find eyedrops that really work.

I have cataracts in both eyes and I have the best luck using Bilberry jam. I also have the juice, but I do not notice the profound difference I do when I take the jam. I usually put 1T. of it on toast of just chow it down from a spoon and after a few days I notice I am seeing much more clearly.

I've read that the English used to hold teas where their war pilots were served Bilberry on biscuits for their night vision. I was quite popular and quite effective.

Cataracts require surgery-outpatient-very fast recovery.

Eye drops are not going to do anything to remove a cataracts. Cataract removal by an eye doctor is rather easy today and and is done in usually less than an hour and then you go home.

I just had a friend have his cataracts removed and he is hopeful he will not need glasses anymore. It is also painless. Don't rely on dubious cures, see an eye doctor.

I asked a similar question here last year about Nu-Eyes eye drops. They are also sold under the name Can-C. They're all the same thing, I believe, N-acetylcarnosine. I never got a good answer, but if you search "Nu-Eyes cataract eye drops" in ThriftyFun, you'll see the earlier discussion.

I am very wary of any kind of surgery, however safe people say it is. We only get one pair of eyes. I would love to find eye drops that work so I don't have to have the surgery eventually.

I've done a little more online research on this, and have found a list of nutritional supplements that are mentioned in various places as helpful in preventing or even improving cataracts - glutathione, N-acetylcysteine, alpha lipoic acid, vitamins A, C and E, bilberry, eyebright, selenium, etc.

There are pills sold that contain all of these things in the right amounts, and they're usually about $30 for a month's supply. I tried one of them, Vision Formula, sold at Walgreen's for $26/month's supply, and they helped, but they are no longer on the market, and I don't know what happened to them. I have also used Similisan's cataract drops, and they're helpful but not as good as Vision Formula was.

I also found that cataracts are a leading cause of blindness in poor countries, and that in East Nigeria, there is a local herbal eyedrop treatment that apparently is quite successful. Unfortunately, it causes the clouded lens to slip to the bottom of the eye, restoring vision, but not attractive. It does give me hope, at least, that an eyedrop can be made that will help.

There are also new improved gel-type lenses that have been developed recently to be used in the surgery, so I am hopeful that the longer I can use the supplements to at least slow the progression of the cataracts, the better the technology will be if and when I have to have the surgery.

I have been using CAN-C eye drops for several yrs now. They dissolved the cataracts that were beginning in both of my eyes (diagnosed during eye exam in '03) within 3 wks 95% of symptoms gone, just a bit of glare sensitivity left, likely 'cause I'm getting older. Now, using 1 drop/day in each eye. Regular supplier stopped selling them, so I'm looking for another. These drops work folks and there is nothing in the Innovative Vision Products that is harmful to the eye as I carefully checked out with several NIH research doctors who do eye research. Do your reasearch and check carefully!

Inoviso always answer emails but are very much non committal. Wise Medicine - the Russian experiment based product - never respond to any email. Used the Wise medicine product for 5 months religiously on diabetic induced cataracts that only begun in July last year with no discernible improvement. Due to the fact I'm desperate and at least Invisio answer correspondence - plus they clai8m to refund if it doesn't work - I'm going for their product this time. Let you know what happens if anything. Happy to speak to people on this subject my email is dorothyskarpaas AT hotmail.com

There is no CURE for cataracts other than surgery. A cataract is a clouding of the lens inside your eye and is surgically treated by removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a lens implant. This is done by an opthamologist and is usually an outpatient surgery. If your vision is cloudy or you have trouble seeing things, you need to see to be evaluated by an opthamologist/eye surgeon, not an optometrist who measure and evaluates you for glasses. Big DIFFERENCE!

I looked up Can-C eyedrops and the active ingredient N-acetylcarnosine. Here is what they have to say about them at the National Library of Medicine:

Looks pretty good. Regardless, you should seek advice from a physician before trying any treatment.

I guess Can-C would probably not help with macular degeneration.

I have only one pair of eyes. I certainly would NOT put something in them that I just found on the internet.
If you have ANY eye problems see a doctor!!!

Can-C TM is the well tested and effective IVP approved form of the N-acetylcarnosine lubricant eye drops. It can reverse and prevent cataracts dependent on the initial visual acuity which should be higher than 20/70 at the beginning of treatment.

I recently had cataract surgery and now I see flashing several times a day, mostly in the morning upon waking and even in the middle of the night when I get up to use the bathroom. Is this typical and how long should something like this last?

Get back to your ophthalmologist asap. Flashing lights in your eyes can mean vessels are tearing. Floaters may last for quite a while, they are usually old blood being released to be absorbed, but can also mean you are bleeding. But the flashing lights are most ominous sign.

I used Nu-Eyes and was able to see better for about one year. But my cataract has gotten worse and I now need surgery. It's very disappointing. Has anyone had this issue?

Nu-eyes was recommended by my opthamologist 3 years ago to stop the progress of cataracts in both eyes. I used it twice a day for about 18 months and my vision has improved so much I only use them once a day to keep the cataracts from coming back. I would definitely recommend them.

I think these positive result ads for n-acetylcarnosine eye drops for cataracts is a scam. When you use eye drops, they land on the cornea of the eye. The cataract is on the lens of the eye which is behind the cornea and fluid sac. There is no way that the drops can penetrate the cornea to get to the lens where the cataract is.
