July 4, 2021

I spilled Awesome cleaner on my hardwood floor. It stripped the polish off of an area. How can I repair it?

Judy is right, it WILL need at least one new coat of polyurethane...probably more. To blend into the old poly finish, take some 180 grit or finer sandpaper and lightly sand around the edge of the stripped area to feather out the old finish. Also lightly sand the bare area of the spill to make sure the surface is evenly bare. Vacuum well, then use a damp cloth to wipe up any remaining sanding dust. Let dry THOROUGHLY. Now you can apply poly with a brush or sponge made for poly finish. Depending how deep the Awesome stripped the finish, you may have to put on more than one coat of poly. When applying the new finish, BE SURE TO FEATHER IT OUT AT THE OVERLAPPED EDGES.

This will help you blend the old and new so it won't be as visible. In fact, you really should let the first coat dry, check to see how it looks, and lightly sand around the edges to help smooth it. Then vacuum and damp wipe the whole area and let dry THOROUGHLY before going on with another coat. You may need to do several coats to get an acceptable look. The only other concern is, is if the old finish is a colored poly or stain. Depending on how long the finish has been on the floor, it will be hard to get a good match. If it doesn't look good enough for your liking, you can always call a pro floor finisher.
Good luck and post back how it goes.

It is going to have to be polyurethaned again. I dont think it will look even if you do just that one spot.

Without knowing what type of finish is on your hardwood floors, it will be difficult to provide suggestions that may or may not work. Some ideas may even do more damage.

I would suggest you call a couple of contractors and ask for an estimate of doing repairs. This way you will find out what type of finish you have and hopefully, they will be honest and tell you if refinishing is really necessary. Be sure you do not have to pay for an estimate when you contact the office.
However, if refinishing is necessary, you may decide to have one of them do the job.

You could also try contacting the company to see if they have any suggestions.

You could also try taking several pictures of the floor area and show these to one of the employees at either Ace or True Value Hardware stores as they may be able to offer some suggestions.

There are some online forums that may be able to help but they will need to know what type of finish is on your floors (so try the contractors first).

At your local home improvement store, they have all types of stains that you can purchase to match the existing floor. Clean the area and apply stain to match, to fix this issue.

Re-varnish the damaged area, possibly several layers, and possibly then the entire floor. Although I think a craftsman could replace the damaged hardwood flooring board, but it is not so easy www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKkbnUhBNmo
