Securing Flowers in a Vase with Plastic Mesh?

How can you use plastic mesh produce bags to secure fresh or silk flowers? I have a tall glass vase and need to secure the silk flowers as I place them inside of it. I have a lot of the plastic mesh produce bags, so I tried to tape a piece of the mesh on the opening of the vase. It didn't work. I thought it would be a good idea to use the mesh since it looks similar to a type of mesh florists use to secure flowers inside vases.

Have you considered putting a floral sponge in the bottom of the vase to hold the flowers in place. This way you can arrange your mesh around the opening of the vase, then add your flowers, and finish the job off with arranging the mesh in peaks or how ever you want it to look.

Do your silk flowers with same length stems or are you trying to use fresh or silk flowers with different length stems?

  • With same length stems it seems you could make a ball of the mesh and push to the bottom of the vase (with no need to attach to top) and your stems would hold them down (do not add water with fresh flowers until your design is set).

  • If the mesh does not stay down or you have different length stems then you could try placing some of the colorful pebbles/stones in the middle of the mesh before dropping it to the bottom of the vase. These are inexpensive (and can be used over and over) and can be found at most big box stores, dollar stores or any craft store as well as on line.
  • Small smooth pebbles or rocks may also work and can be found in many areas.
  • Don't forget: most of these bags have heavy dye so you might want to hand wash them before placing in your vase.

If you cut the mesh large enough you can secure it with a rubber band
