Sewing Soft Leather on a Brother Industrial Machine?

I have been sewing cotton materials and even denim materials all with excellent stitch quality. I have now selected quite soft leather to sew and can't produce a stitch. The material feeds through the machine in the usual way, but only makes holes. I have tried various tensions that do not make any difference. When I revert to the cotton fabric hey presto all is good - help!
